Chapters (32)
And then we’re in the present. More home footage of Cam and me playing around and flirting on set. I have no idea where or who the video came from, but I’m so grateful, because I get to watch us fall in love all over again. And wow, are we obvious. All loaded looks and lingering stares. There’s one clip of the first day, walking into the house … just up the stairs where you can only see our boots, angled together, as we talk about taking on the project. Hand in hand at the flea market, dancing at the bar, my hands twined around his neck, his eyes on me again and again and again. Joking at the barn sale, hugging his mom, him working with my dad, and finally, a quick, meaningful kiss as he walks in the door and hugs me one morning a week or so ago.
Lorelai closes things out, finishing with a longing look over her shoulder, as she picks up her guitar and walks away down a long, lonely road, and I swipe at my cheeks—hot tears slipping from the corners of my eyes.
“That was…” I’m shaking my head, at a loss for words.
The laptop lid comes down with a click and behind it is Cam, down on one knee.
My breath catches even as my heart gives a mighty lurch in my chest. “What are you doing?”
He moves the laptop to the floor and takes my hand. “Shelby, I love you.”
“I love you, too.”
“I’ve loved you since I was a kid. Since before I knew what it meant to love someone.”
“I know.”
He grins at that. “Of course you know. You always knew when it came to us.”
I shrug. “I don’t know why you’re on your knees. We talked about this. You don’t need to get on your knees for me,” I tease.
“Marry me, Shelby.”
I freeze as he pulls a ring out of his pocket.
“Was that there all day?”
“Maybe.”
“Just in your pocket, Cam? You have got to be kidding me.”
“Shelby.” He laughs. “You haven’t answered me.”
“Yes! Please, yes. I want to marry the hell out of you, Cameron Riggs.”
He slumps. “Thank God.”
I slip to the floor, getting on my knees next to him. “I’ve wanted to marry you since the day I met you,” I say, pressing my lips to his for a soft kiss. “Forever and ever, you and me.”
He slips the ring over my finger and stares at it, whistling low. “Wow. I was not prepared for how hot you’d look with my ring on your finger.”
“Oh yeah?”
“Yeah…” he says distractedly, rubbing his hand up and down my back.
“I’m never taking it off.”
He groans. “Fine, as long as I can remove everything else.”
I stand up, taking his hands, and walk us backward toward his bedroom.
