Chapters (32)
I trace a raindrop on the window with my fingertip. “And what did you do?”
“I flew out to L.A.”
“From Alaska, for fuck’s sake. I had no idea you didn’t like flying at that time.” I turn to him, my palm open between us. My heart may as well be resting on it—an offering. My breath is extra loud in the small space of the cab, but this needs to be said. After all this time, Cameron needs to understand. “He never had a chance.”
His dark brows meet together. “But he cheated on you. You were a wreck over it.”
“He was always cheating on me, Cam. Like always. Marcella just happened to be my closest friend at the time, so that part was painful. He was forever making sure I knew I wasn’t it for him, and while I knew he wasn’t it for me either—that we’d been pretty much holding on to the pretense for the sake of our careers—I was still loyal to him. I still cared about him. I thought he cared, too, until his secret album was ready, with his one-sided version of the narrative. I was completely blindsided.”
“Why did you stay with him so long, if you knew all of that?”
“Well, I didn’t know all of it,” I concede, chagrined. “It was more like I stayed in L.A. I didn’t know what else to do. All I was good for was acting and singing. I was typecast in my own life.” I grimace. “They kept giving me roles and singles and I took them. Why wouldn’t I? But Lyle was only a small part of that, and he knew it and resented me for it. He must resent me even more for calling you and getting out of there. It sort of stole his thunder when I went into hiding.”
“Good old Cameron,” he jokes half-heartedly.
“Yes,” I agree sincerely. “Good, decent, handsome Cameron. Who came when I called and refused to take advantage of me even when I threw myself quite literally at his feet.”
“I thought about it,” he admits with a sly half grin.
“Thank God. I’m not too proud to admit my ego has been bruised for years.”
“How could I not? You were wearing my T-shirt. Which, by the way…”
I press my lips together in an attempt to hide my smile at his expression. He shakes his head. “You’re evil.”
“I’m—” crazy for you. “Okay. Listen. That was not planned. But I see how it looks.” I release a long, slow breath, giving myself plenty of time to back out. But I don’t. “Cam, if the whole wide world was on fire and I had to give up everything I owned, I would still have your T-shirt.”
He sucks in a quick breath. “You should’ve had me.”
“What about now?”
