“Wait . . .” Daisy tucks the yoga mat I lent her beneath her arm. “Who’s Jasper? And why is a date such a big deal? Drew’s gorgeous, I’m sure all these Denver men are falling all over her.”

“You’re not wrong about that, but Drew here has yet to say yes to a date in—” She sticks her finger in my face when I open my mouth to defend myself. “Don’t even say it. Those booty calls you’ve manufactured are not dates.”

“Manufactured booty calls?” Daisy repeats, and her blue eyes, which look even brighter in the morning sunlight, crinkle at the corners. “I think I need to hear more about those and also a detailed set of instructions on how you set them up.”

Well, look at that. Looks like my dear sister and I have some things in common after all.

“Oh, it’s really easy. Let’s just say that dick is truly the only infinite resource known to humankind.”

It’s just too bad that only a small portion of it is quality.

“Vulgar,” Elsie scolds me, like she wasn’t just yelling obscenities only seconds ago.

“Ma’am.” I purse my lips and give her my best side-eye. “You have four, count them, four children. You know all about this and you can’t pretend not to.”

“Whatever.” Elsie rolls her eyes but doesn’t fight me on this because she knows I’m right. “But Jasper is no booty call. Jasper Williams literally makes a living creating some of the most beautiful love stories ever written. And to top it off, that man is fine.”

“Wait.” Daisy sounds like she’s on the verge of panic. She grabs Elsie by the shoulders and stares deep into her eyes. “Are you talking about Jasper Williams, author of Rescue Me? Creator of Jaxon Montgomery, my favorite book boyfriend of all time, who has ruined me for all actual, living men?”

Fuck. Does everyone read romance?

“Yes, that Jasper Williams,” Elsie confirms for Daisy. “And let me tell you, that little square picture in the back of his books has nothing on him in real life. He should model every hero in his books as himself. Because yum.”

“Really?” Daisy breathes out the word. Her cheeks are brighter pink now than they were during the entire hour of yoga. “Because even the little picture is good.”

Besides the struggles of owning a bookstore, this might be the hardest part of refusing to indulge in the world of fiction.
