I’m pretty sure he called a real estate agent before the funeral took place. The house sold before her grave had a headstone. I don’t have much faith in him as an overall human, but I still can’t get over the fact that he moved on so quickly from his childhood home.
“Good for him,” Mr. Wilson says, and I can’t tell if he’s being sarcastic or not.
I sit up straighter, wondering if I read him all wrong. Wouldn’t be the first time . . . “I’m sorry?”
“Good for your dad,” he repeats his earlier sentiment. “That’s what Alice wanted.”
My argument dies on my tongue, those four little words knocking the wind out of me.
“I first met your grandmother two years ago. She worked with my predecessor to get her first will written, so when she came to me, it was just updating a few things.” He opens a file on his desk that I didn’t even notice was there and hands me a stack of papers. His voice is very soft and his eyes are attentive. He’s tracking my every movement and it’s clear he can read that I’m ready to bolt. “You can see there, the first things were easy. She wanted to leave Daisy Young her wedding ring and ten thousand dollars. She also had one of her brokerage accounts transferred to Daisy.”
I vaguely remember hearing all of this at the reading of the will, which feels like ages ago, but I was in such a fog that this feels like the first time I’m learning all of this.
“Then we know she gave her house, car, and possessions to Andrew Young. She did this with the firm understanding that he would sell these things and make money from the sale. I can tell you that she was not under the illusion that he would sit on that property and hold vigil. She knew what the outcome would be.”
He leans forward and flips the page for me again, and on this one, my name is listed in bold print. I can’t look at it. I’m not sure why seeing this makes me feel so emotional, but I promised myself that I was done crying and I’m not ready to renege on that.
“I need you to know that I have a lot of clients. I don’t remember the details of these meetings off the top of my head for many of them because there’s simply too many.” He pauses, holding my eye contact in a way that causes me to brace. “But I remember talking to Alice Young about a Drew Young with a clarity that still surprises me.”
I suck in a sharp breath, my pulse speeding up as my sinuses start to go all wonky.
He waits to see if I say anything, only continuing on when he’s met with silence.
