“See what?” I twist around to face him. There is still more to look at, but this isn’t a view to sneeze at. “We could try to go up to the top if you want to give it a go again, but I think—”
“Not that.” It’s too loud for me to hear his quiet laughter, but I can feel it. “I mean can I see the pictures you took?”
My heart stutters in my chest and I’m not sure if it’s because I love that he wants to see them or because I’m absolutely terrified. I used to share my photography all the time. But ever since I tucked my camera away, the few pictures I have snapped I’ve kept close to my vest.
It crosses my mind to say no. He’s an artist and I doubt he’d want to share a book before he’s edited and polished it up a little bit; I’m sure he’d understand if I asked him to wait. But then something outweighs my fear and I remember that this is Jasper and I want to share with him.
“Okay, but remember”—I tighten my grip on my camera as I issue my warning—“it’s not edited and the finished photo will look much different.”
He grins down at me, unbridled delight making him even more stunning than the canyon we’re exploring.
I pull up the tiny snaps on the small screen of my camera, using the arrow to move through them all.
“Hold on.” His hand wraps around mine, stopping me from scrolling further. “This one.”
I look at the picture he hasn’t taken his eyes off. It’s a shot of the opening of the canyon. Tree-covered mountains are just visible through the rocks, and the white creek below drifts out into the openness.
“This one what?” It’s a pretty picture of a pretty location, but I don’t quite understand his excitement over it.
“That’s what I want my cover for this book to be.” He doesn’t take his eyes off the screen as his words knock the air out of me. “This is perfect.”
I probably don’t need to say this, but my photo being used for a novel cover was never something I ever even considered. Which is why I’m not prepared for the onslaught of emotions I feel at his request.
“Thank you.” I pull my camera away from him, not ready to look at him and let him see how much that meant to me. “Have your people call my people,” I joke.
“Will do.” He brushes his lips across my cheek and then boxes me in against the railing. Other visitors walk behind us and snap pictures, but we don’t move. I don’t know what Jasper is thinking, but at this moment, I feel closer to him than ever before.
