In fact, Deven had spent all night scribbling in a notebook. She had drawn a line down the middle, dividing the page in half, with two headings across the top: What I Know and What I Need To Do. Under the What I Know column, she had bulleted the raw details she’d discovered since Sunday. Everything from the ghostly woman in the morgue, to the prescriptions she found at Kennedy’s apartment with names of other women, the missing gun, and now Paul’s revelation about the missing Amber.
On the other side of the page, Kennedy had made a checklist of sorts, leads that she had to do more research on and things she needed to look into. There were about five items on the list (so far, because Deven was hoping she would be able to add more). Going to the police station to talk to Officer McKinney was the first item on today’s agenda. So, Benji would just have to wait. She was sure he understood. It wasn’t like he had been immediately forthcoming with whatever the hell he was snooping around about either.
The drive downtown was quick, way too quick for Deven’s liking. She’d come prepared with the ‘Kennedy Notebook’ she’d been filling up with notes, and she was armed with a few more questions for the police. It wasn’t until she’d been jotting down her observations that Deven realized she hadn’t asked any more details about the discovery of the body in Kennedy’s apartment. At the time, the inquiry seemed trivial. But now, she was anxious to know more to help put the pieces together. Now whether she was going to relay her information to the police, well the jury was still out on that one. But Deven had to admit, she did feel better equipped with a little more knowledge in her arsenal.
The lot was peppered with police cars, uniformed officers decorating the sidewalks as they moseyed in and out of the brick building. Deven wheeled into one of the parking spaces in the back and grabbed her purse and notebook to get out. The muffled chime of her cell phone stopped her short. She released the sigh before she realized it and she dug in her purse for the device. She had already figured it was Justin before even confirming it with a distracted glance to the screen.
