Deven looked at the woman through her obscured vision. All she saw was an evil monster. “I loved Kennedy. She’s always known that.”
“No, you didn’t.” April stooped to pick up Kennedy’s diary from the box and held it up in the air. “I told you she was so weak-minded that she couldn’t even see it. But I saw it from the beginning. As soon as she came to live with us, and she told me stuff about you. I wasn’t sure until I read it for myself in her diary. You’ve been gaslighting Kennedy since you were kids.”
Fear had Deven’s eyes widening, and she shook her head feverishly. “That’s not true!”
“It’s not?” April snorted. “So, you weren’t jealous of her since she was your mom’s favorite? When you saw an inkling of maybe, just maybe your mom loved Kennedy a tad bit more because she was her only connection to Keith, you didn’t make it your mission to ostracize your sister? Telling her your mother didn’t like her? Making her feel lonely?”
Deven’s blood chilled. “Hell no!”
“And you didn’t hear your dad say that it was Kennedy that was standing in the way since your parents kept having so many problems?”
This time, Deven could only listen to her breath roaring in her ears. “I loved Kennedy,” she whispered.
April was unfazed. “And you weren’t the one that pushed and pushed for Kennedy to agree to move in with her dad so she didn’t have to be in the way anymore?”
“That was what she wanted!”
“You can turn off the act now, Deven. I mean damn it has been years, but you don’t think I know all the shit you did as a child? Your little ‘pretending’ like you had your sister’s best interest at heart, but it really was just a mind game for your little rivalry?”
Deven was panicked as she shook her head. “No, no, that’s not true! I loved . . .” The color drained from her face as April walked to her purse and pulled another book into view. A diary. This time, HER diary. How did she get that?
“I figured you still had yours,” April said, waving the diary in the air. “In fact, you told me you did. So, I broke into your apartment and what do you know, I was so right about you. All this time . . .”
The pieces began to click into place. “Wait, it was you? You broke into my apartment and left the note from Deuce?”
“Well, I couldn’t very well let you know that it was me,” April shrugged and tossed the book on the floor at Deven’s feet. “Read it.”
