Deven leaned forward and lowered her voice, though she seriously doubted anyone was paying attention to them. “Kennedy is . . .” she paused, then decided, “missing. It seems like she’s running a few scams and I’m not sure if she is in danger.”

“Danger? Did she contact Deuce like I told her?”

Deven’s ears perked. “Why would you tell her to contact Deuce? What was going on?”

“She came by and told me she had a little stalker situation,” he revealed. “Apparently the person attacked her at home.”

Deven nodded, remembering the incident the night she came home from the hospital because of her miscarriage. “Did she say who it was?” she asked. “Male, female, ex-boyfriend?”

“No. All she said was that she thought she knew who the person was, but she didn’t give me any details. My old cellmate, Deuce, I knew was into some shit where he could find the person, so I put them in contact with each other.”

“I think he found whoever she was looking for,” Deven said. “But the thing is, no one seems to know where she is now. Not Deuce, not Benji. And the police think something may have happened.”

Keith’s frown was so deep it was a wonder his face didn’t fold over in the creases. “You think she’s in trouble?”

“I don’t know. That’s why I’m worried. I’m not sure if she’s missing because something happened to her, or she’s afraid, or she’s hiding because she’s done something illegal . . . so I have no idea. I just want some answers.”

“I don’t have any answers for you,” Keith retorted with a shrug.

“Well, why don’t you tell me what the fuck has been going on these past few months with Kennedy. I know she’s been talking to you and I’m sure she mentioned whatever was going on with her.”

Keith chuckled as he twirled some of the hair in his beard. “And where do you come off telling me what I need to do, Deven?” he asked.

“That’s the least you can do.”

“I don’t owe you shit.”

Of course, he wouldn’t think so. “Everything that happened is because of you,” Deven chided. “You stole my mom, my family. They had all these problems in their relationship because of you. That shit is foul, Keith.”
