“My friend obtained this information as a favor,” he reminded her. “If it gets out, he was using his position to pull records and release this information to me, we all could get in trouble. Mainly him.”
Deven sucked in a sharp breath. She certainly hadn’t thought about that.
“But the cop is right, I don’t feel comfortable with you here,” he said.
“It’s not like I have anywhere else to go.” Shit, she hadn’t meant to say that. Now it sounded like she was throwing hints for Paul to ask her to stay with him. And she could tell by the sudden glint in his eye he had caught the subtext of her comment, and liked the idea, so she quickly rushed on. “So, we never got to discuss what your friend emailed you about him.” Deven turned her back on Paul to move into the living room. “We need to see how dangerous this man is.” She felt his eyes on her back and she prayed he wouldn’t circle back to the uncomfortable conversation.
Thankfully, he didn’t as he joined her on the couch and pulled out his phone. “Let me check the email.”
Deven tucked her legs under her as she watched him scroll, then read the message aloud. “His real name is Dion Morris,” he started. “Age twenty-eight, alias is Deuce. Apparently, he’s in the system so Officer McKinney will have no problems finding him. Look.” He scooted closer and held out his phone for Deven to see the screen. “Incarcerated multiple times for drug possession, assault, robbery, parole violations . . . He did six years in Wilcox State Prison.”
Deven scanned the email message that corroborated his exact words. Damn, what was Kennedy doing dating this criminal?
“It seems he’s real smart, a tech guy,” Paul read on. “Builds computers, hacking, stuff like that. So now people hire him as a Tracker.”
Deven’s eyebrows drew together. “A Tracker? Like tracking people or something?”
“Looks that way.”
She sat back in thought. “So, do you think he uses his tech skills to track people down and then robs them? Like Amber?”
“I don’t know, it just doesn’t make sense,” Paul shook his head. “So, he tracked me down? And Kennedy dated me to distract me?”
He was right. It still didn’t make sense.
“We need to go to Kennedy’s apartment,” she decided. “There must be something there. Something I overlooked. After I found that picture of you, I wasn’t even thinking about anything else.” Her mind flipped to Benji. He was sneaking something while they were there. And he had called trying to get back in the apartment for some reason. Of course, he knew something too. Why hadn’t she reconsidered that part?
Deven jumped up and headed for the bedroom to get her cell.
“What’s going on?” Paul followed, watching as she snatched her phone from the nightstand.
