McKinney was visibly agitated. “Where did you get the name and information for Amber Wright, Ms. Reynolds?” she asked. “And how did you figure it was some kind of connection?”
Deven looked to Paul, searching for help.
“Deven showed me a picture of a girl’s night out,” he jumped in. “Kennedy was in the picture and their mutual friend, Amber. But Amber got married and moved away years ago. Deven just never really liked the friend much.”
It was a weak excuse, but it was the best they could do. Deven was grateful for Paul. Her mind was too convoluted to think of anything remotely rational at the moment.
“I apologize for wasting your time,” she said standing.
“Hold up, that’s some bullshit!” Yolanda stood again as well. “My daughter had some fraud on her credit a few months ago. Credit cards and shit opened in her name. A bank account her father and I set up when she was four, has been completely depleted. That’s over three hundred thousand. Gone!” She spat each word with venom as she narrowed her eyes at Deven. “Now these people claim there is some connection with some girl named Kennedy. They know something!”
“Mrs. Wright—”
“I want them investigated,” Yolanda yelled. “They stole my daughter’s money. Or they sure as hell know who did.”
McKinney cast wary eyes at Deven. “Ms. Reynolds, do you know anything about this fraud and stolen money Mrs. Wright is alleging?”
Deven pursed her lips and shook her head. “No, I don’t,” she lied.
“Ms. Reynolds, I really hope you’re not lying to me. Because if I find out otherwise . . .” The officer let the warning hang suspended between them.
“Oh, you don’t have to worry, Officer.” Yolanda was already headed to the door with Amber scurrying to catch up. “They know something. And my husband and I will make sure that they and their sister, are thrown in jail.”
“Why would you tell them about Amber?” Paul hadn’t even driven out of the parking lot before he started firing off questions.
Deven held her fingers to her temples to stave off the beginnings of a headache. “I don’t know,” she confessed. “I guess after we spoke the first time, I just thought . . . I don’t know.”
Paul’s hand found hers across the middle console and as much as she knew it was best, she couldn’t bring herself to let it go. “I get it,” he said. “You figured it would still be her using that name.”
“Yeah, and maybe we would have a few more answers. I didn’t know it was just a random rich girl.” Deven shook her head struggling to digest the recent news. “She took that girl’s college savings, Paul. How heartless can she be?”
“She is an heiress to the Wright Hotel chain. I seriously doubt she’s going to go hungry because that money was taken.”
