Satisfied, Paul finished the rest of his wine before placing the glass in the sink. “Well, maybe I should get going,” he started. “I’ll let you know if Deuce’s license plate turns up something.”
“Sounds good.” And because she felt she owed it to him, Deven touched Paul’s arm. “And hey, thank you. For everything. I’m sorry you’re tied up in all this.”
Paul’s gaze never faltered and Deven felt her face warm under his intensity. It was suddenly stuffy in the kitchen; their contact shooting bolts of electricity racing up her arm. As if on cue, her body purred to life. What the hell was she doing?
Flushed, Deven dropped her arm and took a step backwards, nearly colliding into the breakfast table. “Um, do you need me to walk you out?” she fumbled, dragging a hand over the back of her neck.
“No, I got it.” Yet still, he didn’t make a move. Deven couldn’t even be sure she wanted him to. “It’s interesting,” he went on, his voice thick with arousal. “I never really realized how much you two favor . . .”
“Well, we are sisters.”
“Yeah, but I meant in other ways.” Paul’s eyes were taking a slow, methodical survey of Deven’s face now, then hair, and finally trailing down her body. “I have to ask myself, was I so attracted to her because she reminded me of you.”
Deven released a staggering exhale and braced against the passion that threatened to drown her like a tidal wave. Don’t do this, she silently begged, but she didn’t know if the plea was for him. Or her. They couldn’t indulge. It would be wrong, so very wrong.
Paul lifted his hand to graze her neck, gently coaxing her to him. She melted against his body, her lips searching for his. The kiss was slow, sensual, and staggering as both took their time savoring each other’s essence. Deven didn’t bother thinking anymore, only feeling. And oh, did she feel this man in every fiber. The ache left her body quivering.
He moved his lips to her neck as he pulled her coat off and then her shirt, pausing only briefly to pull the garment over her head. Then his hands were everywhere, soft like satin and tender with a doctor’s precision. He was taking his time, his movements like a tease that caused her skin to ignite in the echoes of his strokes. When he picked her up to put her on the counter, Deven wrapped around his frame, his name like a melody on her lips. Damn, she needed this. She hadn’t realized how much.
