Thank you to every single critique partner and beta reader, the Mermaids, #the21ders, the class of 2k21, YAYSquad, Mary R., Alechia, Faridah, Ayana, Alexa, Jesse Q. Sutanto, Graci Kim, Sonora, Naz, Taj, my Twitter writing community, to whom I will always and forever be indebted. To my followers on socials, educators who have brought Rue into their classrooms, bloggers, bookstagrammers, any and everyone who has ever retweeted a post, shared, or commented, thank you. Your love of Rue and all she stands for is a huge part of why her story has been shared so widely. I am so grateful for the place she holds in your heart.
And lastly, thank you, Houston, the southeast side, off Scott between Sunnyside and Third Ward, Jack Yates Lions, Cullen Bobcats, the amazing Velda Hunter. Thank you for the magic you inspire, the greatness you produce. Thank you for rearing and raising me. You shine so brightly!
It is my hope, with this author thing, I’m making you proud.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR
© Chris Spicks Photography
J. ELLE was born in Houston, Texas, and is a first-generation college student with a bachelor’s in journalism and an MA in educational administration and human development. An advocate for marginalized voices in both publishing and her community, J. Elle’s passion for empowering youth dates back to her first career in education. She’s worked as a preschool director, middle school teacher, and high school creative writing mentor. In her spare time, she volunteers at an alternative school, provides feedback for aspiring writers, loves on her three littles, and cooks up dishes true to her Texas and Louisiana roots. Ashes of Gold is her second novel.
