  31. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Olivia stood and walked out, done with Neve. She didn’t need the stupid cabin for her business. She could buy another ten times nicer than this one. Sure, they’d just arrived, but Chase would probably love to pack their bags and head back to Malibu.

Olivia jerked open the front door.

Chase and Zeke were leaning against a suspect rail and stopped midconversation at the abrupt interruption.

“Get your things, Chase. We’re leaving.”

Chase’s eyes widened. “Why? The electricity can’t be fixed?”

“It’s not that. I’ve decided this cabin is not the right place for your therapy.”

Chase shook her head. “But we’re already here, and I told Zeke I’d go fishing with him tomorrow. He’s a guide, and he’s going to teach me how to fly-fish. I’ve always wanted to try fishing.”

Zeke watched Olivia with a cautious expression. Olivia felt the world closing in, pressing her. She didn’t want to stay here with Neve. The earlier memories that had been so comforting now felt as if they were tightening a vise around her body, squeezing her too hard. She’d been stupid to bring Chase here, insane to drag herself into her own past. With Neve showing up, the sense of reckoning had become even stronger, drowning out who she normally was. She needed to get control of the situation, and she couldn’t do that here.

“You said you didn’t want to stay,” Olivia said.

“I don’t. Or I didn’t. But where are we going if we leave?”

Good question. She truly didn’t want to take Chase back to LA. She’d thought Chase needed a reprieve from the world that had face-planted her into addiction, but maybe going back to LA would work to Chase’s advantage. Olivia could stay with Chase for a few weeks, helping her to navigate the world the actress would eventually live in. She’d planned on staying with Chase a week after the adulting boot camp as a sort of reentry anyway. Chase would do fine in LA. Besides, obviously this run-down cabin next door to a male distraction was a bad idea.

For the first time in a long time, Olivia didn’t know what to do. Which was intolerable because Olivia Han always had a plan. But at present, she felt upside down. And why in the devil after complaining nonstop about the cabin would Chase want to stay to go . . . fishing?

Fishing.

“I thought we could go back to the Malibu house. I’m very surprised you want to stay here.” Olivia spread her hands out to encompass the house and land.
