  31. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Olivia’s stomach twisted, and she squeezed the armrest, trying to center herself and not let her emotions ricochet out of control. “Don’t do this today. I mean it, Neve.”

“Why are you doing this to us? You teach people to forgive themselves, but you withhold forgiveness from our father just because he said some crap about therapists. I just don’t understand you.”

How could Olivia relay how her father made her feel? How he always made her feel—not good enough. Charming and smart, her father had navigated the education system like a professional gambler, knowing when to hold the cards and when to show them. He’d been almost untouchable until he’d been arrested.

Charged for lewd and lascivious acts with a minor, her father had proclaimed he’d been misunderstood, that his overaffectionate, hands-on methodology of providing a loving environment in the school had been misconstrued. At first Olivia and her mother and sister had believed him, but while her father was awaiting trial, Olivia had counseled some children who’d been abused by their babysitter and had begun to suspect their father’s insistence that he was being railroaded might be off. When she’d confronted him, he’d belittled her profession and accused her of siding with the alleged victims because she wanted to advance her career. The blowup around her father’s case led to their falling-out and necessitated a name change. She’d never known if he was guilty or innocent, but after seeing her father’s true colors, she hadn’t cared.

“Fine. Let’s go clean our cabin. Since it belongs to both of us, I’m assuming I can loan it out to friends? We can make a schedule or something. Maybe a few months where it belongs to me, and others that belong to you. Ground rules would be good, and, of course, if you’re making money using it for clients, we’ll have to talk about my percentage. How much is this chick paying you?”

Olivia gritted her teeth because she knew exactly what Neve was doing. “I get it. You’re going to try to hold me hostage with this cabin. Why are you helping Dad? He destroyed our family, Neve.”

“Don’t believe your own bullshit, Liv. You’re the one keeping our family apart. Dad served time for something he didn’t do just to make things easier on us. You built an enormous wall just because he called out your profession. Just because he disagreed with you. Your ego is the issue.”

Fury erupted inside her. “What happened was between me and Dad. It has nothing to do with you and Mom. Plus, you don’t know the truth, do you? You only know his side. I talked to the girls. Everything about what happened was inappropriate. So don’t believe your own bullshit.”
