- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Neve shook her head. “Nope. There are three rooms. I’m staying in one of them tonight. Maybe tomorrow night, too. I’m picking Mom up on Saturday afternoon. Besides, you’re not the only one who gets to decide what happens with this cabin, and really, you should have made sure it was okay with me before you rolled up here and parked your ass in something I’m half owner of.”
“I’ll write you a check for your half right now. I had it appraised right after Papa Joe passed away and the cabin came into our possession. I’ll give you half of the appraisal amount.” Olivia was not dealing with Neve for two nights.
But she’d overplayed her hand. Neve smiled. “I don’t think so.”
Damn it. Olivia should have offered to buy the cabin months ago when Neve needed money for the car she wanted to buy. Now Neve knew Olivia wanted the cabin. Of course, Olivia didn’t know if she wanted to keep the place. This afternoon as she’d cleaned out the kitchen, sorting through worn flour sack towels, old wooden spoons, and her grandfather’s prized cast-iron skillets, she’d thought about keeping it as a getaway. The memories had wafted out like bacon on those long-ago mornings, and Olivia wondered if she could part with the one piece of her past that meant something to her. Deep in her marrow, she knew this cabin could be the perfect place to retreat from the hardness of the world, but she would have to settle things with Neve.
It was as if she’d summoned the devil with that thought.
And now she’d tipped Neve off. If anything, her older sister knew how to read a room and would use that knowledge to her advantage. Olivia would have to wait her out.
“Fine. You can sleep in the bunk room. Chase and I already have our rooms selected, and that’s the only one left.” No sense in standing there arguing with Neve. Her sister had dug in her heels.
Neve looked over at Chase. “Wait. I know who you are. I just saw you on the cover of the Tattler. Spencer Rome? You really tapping that? ’Cause damn, girl.”
Chase made a face reminiscent of the day Olivia first met her. Total disdain and mistrust.
Nonplussed, Neve continued. “Think you can get me his autograph?”
Chase closed the door behind Neve and shot Olivia an annoyed look. The actress bypassed Neve and started toward the staircase without a word.
Olivia had just turned to follow her upstairs when another knock sounded. She closed her eyes and released a breath. Thank God. Finally.
Chase stomped back over to the door and opened it.
Zeke.
Not who she wanted.
But another guy stood on the porch behind him.
