- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Neve had dropped out of USC to marry a guy she’d only known for a month. Turned out Neve was good at bad decisions. The guy she’d met at the bar, who’d romanced her and used her student loans that semester to finance his bodybuilding career, turned out to be an asshole who couldn’t hold a job or win any competitions. He took his failures out on Neve, verbal abuse that started several weeks after they’d run off to Vegas together. Of course, Neve never let on what was happening behind closed doors. Olivia’s sister made excuses for her husband’s drinking and joblessness, and it had ripped a hole in their relationship, especially when Olivia had tried to help. Neve hadn’t appreciated her successful sister pointing out Scott’s issues. She never appreciated much about anything Olivia tried to do.
Neve held up a key. “I could ask you the same thing. You know Papa Joe’s lawyer sent me a key, too.”
“Well, you can’t stay. I’m using the property for work.”
Neve’s face darkened. “Who said you get to call dibs, Liv?”
Olivia ignored the irritation in Neve’s voice. They hadn’t gotten along well in years. “Where’s Mom?”
Chase’s head bounced back and forth as she watched Olivia and Neve’s tense exchange.
“She’s with her friends. They’re doing a ‘girls’ weekend’ over in Calosa, so I drove them there and came here to see what needed to be done to the place. I was thinking maybe we could make it a Vrbo or something since you won’t sell it.”
“I never said we weren’t selling it,” Olivia said, walking down the stairs, alarm pricking at Neve mentioning dropping her mother off with her friends. They had a deal about their mother and gambling. Calosa had the One Horse Casino. “But we’re not leasing out the cabin. No strangers in here tramping around and tearing things up.”
Neve looked around. “Well, no shit. No one would rent a dump like this.”
Chase arched a brow. “That’s exactly what I said. It’s practically unlivable. We don’t even have electricity.”
Neve looked over at Chase. “Who are you?”
Chase made a face. Olivia wasn’t sure if it was because Neve didn’t recognize her or if it was because Neve was so abrupt.
“She’s none of your concern. I’m sorry you drove all this way, but you can’t stay at this time. I’m using the cabin for Chase’s therapy.” Olivia crossed her arms, the way she always did when it came to dealing with her difficult sister. Neve had always been confrontational, argumentative, and plain exasperating. If you told her something was yellow, she would say it was orange. That was her way, and she’d gotten worse since her divorce.
