  31. ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Those words were like an ice cube down her shirt. Which she totally didn’t need. But that didn’t make the impact any less. Spencer knew exactly who he was. Always had. Being an actor for him had always been so easy. For a long time, he’d looked so much like a child that he hadn’t had to deal with being sexualized the way she had. Because it had taken him a while to go through puberty, he’d played geeky characters, the way Anthony Michael Hall had back in the 1980s. It wasn’t until he’d turned twenty-two, put on forty pounds of lean muscle, and done the ad for the watch company that he’d achieved sex symbol status. Spencer knew how to navigate Hollywood. Maybe it was easier because he was a white male whose father was a music executive. Or maybe it was just who he was. Spencer hadn’t fallen into the ditch the way Chase had.

“What about Olivia?” Chase asked.

“What about her?” he asked, cocking his head.

“She’s . . . not like us. She doesn’t . . . I guess I’m regretting telling you that she was into you.”

Spencer made a face. “Why?”

“Because I don’t want her to get hurt.”

“We’re two grown people. No one forced anyone to do anything. It’s not like I pressured her or talked her into it. Totally not that guy, and you know that.”

“I know you didn’t do anything like that. I guess I just feel responsible because I could see you were both into each other. Thing is, I didn’t think beyond last night. I just don’t want Olivia to be another conquest. So I wish I hadn’t tried to play matchmaker.”

Spencer’s face went from his normally charming, devil-may-care to something that could be deemed offended. “Look, Chase. You didn’t force anything. I’m not stupid. I could see the way she looked at me, and you knew she was my type. I like Olivia. She’s wound up pretty tight, but underneath, she’s interesting, smart, and someone who doesn’t treat me like a side of beef. I know she likes the goods, but I like her goods, too. You have nothing to do with that.”

“I guess that’s true. I merely felt a little responsible and don’t want her to be surprised by—”

The microphone Carol used to announce the next celebrity squelched.

Spencer set his hand on her shoulder. “Hey, I’m not using her. If I want sex, I can get that. I didn’t feel obligated, and it wasn’t a charity fuck.”

Chase nodded.
