- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Olivia wasn’t certain what they should do with the cabin, but she could agree with her sister that whatever it was, updates were needed. And she’d been thinking about Chase’s comment about her sister. If she stepped back, she could see the issues between them—Marley’s death had been hard on everyone, and their father’s arrest and trial even more difficult in a different way. Pair that with Olivia’s success and prickliness about her career, and Neve’s lack of a profession and devastating divorce, and they were creating a recipe for dysfunction every time they met up. Maybe Olivia needed to let off the gas when it came to her sister and give her a little grace.
Neve climbed out, looking to be in a decent mood. “Hey, what’s with the fire?”
Olivia glanced over to where Chase and Zeke sat, heads together. “Chase raked leaves today. Zeke helped her, and they decided to reward their hard work with hot dogs and s’mores.”
Neve smiled at the couple in the distance, who’d started laughing again. “You gotta big problem if she’s not supposed to be into a guy. ’Cause that looks like she’s way into him.”
Olivia sighed. “Yeah, but I can only control so much. I can coach her actions, but I can’t control her heart.”
“Did you just hear your own words?” her sister said, lifting two bags from the back of her car. Neve rose and leveled a look at Olivia over the hood.
Olivia gave her a flat look.
Neve just smiled. “Anyway, I brought stuff for doing hair tomorrow. Chase said I needed fancy doodads and lots of hair spray.”
“Chase used the word doodads?” Olivia felt relieved Neve had tossed her an olive branch. Her words were a reminder to herself. Hearts couldn’t be controlled. She knew that very, very well. Thing was, she wasn’t sure she trusted her heart, or if her heart had been deceived by what she had erected long ago. Did she still love Conrad?
She wasn’t sure.
Neve shook her head. “No. But I inferred it. Hey, I know big words, too.”
Olivia took one of her sister’s bags and opened the door for her. Her inclination was to scathingly return Neve’s volley. But she was going to be kinder to her sister, starting now. “I know you’re smart, Neve.”
Her sister made a face. “Is there a trap ahead or something?”
“No.” Olivia set her sister’s bag at the foot of the stairs. “How long are you staying?”
Neve turned and closed the door. “I’m not sure. I actually wanted to talk to you about that.”
