- ABOUT THE AUTHOR
Olivia put a second coat on Martha Courtney’s nails and maneuvered the fan so the “Some Like It Hot” nail polish could dry. Across from her with makeup palettes and brushes so specific that she couldn’t fathom how to use them sat Chase sponging foundation on another patron of Rock Glen Retirement Center. Chase wore her hair swept back, and her bottom lip caught between her teeth as she critically eyed her workmanship.
Across the room in a makeshift salon chair borrowed from the Cutup Salon, Neve stood teasing Rita’s red mane into a bouffant high enough to get her a role in Hairspray. Olivia had seen the community theatre advertisements for the musical at the Sak-N-Sav a few days ago and wondered if that was the influence for Rita.
Neve had arrived late last night, right after Olivia had left Zeke and Chase to the rest of the s’mores. She’d moseyed out to say hello to Zeke but immediately felt like a third wheel. Chase had been sitting close to him, snuggled beneath one of the throws Olivia had picked up in Redmond. They’d been laughing about Zeke’s childhood escapades looking for Sasquatch. Chase had gotten marshmallow in her hair, and Zeke reached over at one point and wiped the chocolate from the corner of her mouth. He’d sucked his finger into his mouth, and the poignant intimacy elbowed Olivia back toward the porch.
Olivia wasn’t in favor of Chase starting a relationship even at this point in her recovery, but she also couldn’t deny that Zeke had been a good influence on the actress, a role model for what being an adult was. He was patient, kind, and said all the right things. He seemed to be far from the selfish, shallow men that had existed in Chase’s life to date. Outside of Spencer, of course. So far Chase and Zeke had seemed to stay in the friend zone, but something was building between them. Olivia wasn’t sure if she could or should stop it. Maybe Chase needed Zeke in her life.
She left them to finish off the s’mores, and as she was climbing the front porch steps, her sister pulled into the drive.
Neve drove an old Nissan that had a dent on the passenger side. No doubt her sister needed a new car. The headlights caught Olivia, so she lifted her hand in greeting, though she wished for the millionth time that her sister would have stayed home. But Neve never did what was easy or sensible. This inheritance had snagged her interest, and she now saw fixing up the cabin as a profitable endeavor. She’d been sending Olivia paint samples and cheap fix-ups for house flips. Suffice it to say, Olivia now had a Pinterest account to keep up with all the Pins Neve had sent her.
