Big shout-out to wonderful writer, editor, artist, and human Cory Skerry. For seeing my short stories in the slush-pile years ago and campaigning for them, for the invaluable and detailed advice on stories and earlier versions of this book (not to mention life/career stuff). You should stop and read his short story “Antumbra” right now. Thanks for becoming a friend. Thanks, too, to writer and editor Spencer Ellsworth for editorial advice, and the I-Park Foundation for two life-changing fellowships.
My parents, Manuela and Victor, are my heroes. They both moved to America from Portugal in their teens and learned English, then devoted their careers to educating under-served communities in Fall River, Massachusetts. Between working multiple jobs, they instilled in me and my sisters a deep love of travel and an appreciation of our heritage. Among a million other things, thanks Dad for the stories you made up while taking us on walks around the neighborhood; thanks Mom for the sci-fi TV nights where you took us to other worlds.
Thank you to my sisters, Sophia and Cassandra. Two amazing women, mothers, and writers of beautiful stories (I can’t wait for you to hold their books in your hands, too). Sophia for introducing me to a ton of art and culture picked up by her always curious mind. Cassandra for her unflappable kindness and humor, and for not only being the best twin, but a friend. And to my whole family for the love.
To my friends, thanks for the gifts of your friendship and support. For the laughter, and trips, and costumes, particularly the last couple of years when the world turned upside down. I’m so lucky to call you friends.
To Ruby for the love and the long walks.
Thanks to Eamonn, for everything, always.
