  41. About the Author

Up maintenance stairways in blind panic until, finally, we found the lobby and ran at the Envisioner. Me with my arms outstretched like I was rushing a quarterback, and Yusuf with one hand on my shoulder. My hands connected with the machine and for a few agonizing seconds nothing happened as I tried to clear my head and feel for the threads of the other universes. The wispy spider web of light. I pushed at the first thread I felt with my mind and the gateway opened. No time for thinking or hesitating. We jumped through.

THUNDERSNOW

This was not supposed to be a thriller.

Especially with how all my films are people sitting around and talking about their feelings, I didn’t expect my life to have explosions, and face-punching, and evil geniuses who look like my boyfriend monologuing at me while I’m tied to a chair.

The idea of a life eating dinner in front of the TV every night makes me want to chew on salted glass, but all this is dialed-up too much, even for me.

Anyway. I’m taking a break from storyboarding this all out for you since my throat has turned to sandpaper. I kick on over to our campsite, fish another banana-coconut out of our stash, and slam it on a rock to suck out the juice.

Maybe I was too hard on Kaori that last bit, talking about her like a spy flick henchwoman. It’s easy for me to paint her—and even Figueiredo—as faceless stock villains and we’re just running for our lives like innocent heroes with moving backstories. When I’m thinking of myself and Yusuf and she’s thinking of the billions of lives I may or may not be responsible for eventually killing. When I walked into that glass-walled room with her and Figueiredo and before she even opened her mouth and I just saw her eyes, I knew she was right. But I also knew she was wrong at the same time—because she had to be. Because I wanted her to be, like how you can hold two thoughts in your head that should cancel each other out. God doesn’t exist but then also there’s a god who’s personally interested in my specific needs and mainly uses his magic to help beautiful, rich people win awards.
