  41. About the Author

Dr. Nakamori knows she’s on this asteroid to make a sacrifice. With all the wonders the Oracle Box promised—new advances in clean energy and medicine, a whole multiverse to explore—she knows what she has to do. Even with everyone doubting her, just as they have her whole life.

“I’m setting the Box to blow,” she huffs.

“Doc, don’t be stupid! We need it!” her second-in-command, Amir, squawks over the comm-link in her helmet. He’s a composite character, a mash-up of Yusuf and a bunch of other researchers. At least they got the hair right, Yusuf said when he first eyed the actor.

“Think of what the Oracle Box has already given us,” Amir begs her. “We can’t just throw it away.”

“All that’ll mean nothing if the planet is a pile of rubble, Amir. For once, I need you to trust me,” she shouts, already the plan building behind her steely eyes.

“Oh, what the hell,” Yusuf moans, so softly that I can barely hear.

Alright, so basically there’s not a single scene in this movie that’s anything like the documentary footage that I cut together and released to the news three years ago, right after Yusuf and I left the Compound. That footage saw Kaori opening a portal directly to the asteroid, overloading the Envisioner, and tossing it through to blow the rock to a million pieces. I even added footage of the Compound staff cheering her name in the Theater after they’d stopped that bus bomb in Cape Town. Dr. Nakamori, you just saved humanity! But I get the need to make the script a little sexier for wide release.

I heard Kaori got a story consultant credit, though how she could find the time away from running the Near-Earth Defense Program on China’s lunar base to prevent another potentially world-ending event is beyond me. And all that after the speeches and the books and the sit-down interviews about her work because of the shared duty for humanity and cooperation and empathy that spans universes and blah. I heard rumors on the doc boards that Kaori cloned the Envisioner tech and is going to reboot her own program to surpass even Figueiredo’s work. Teleportation. Gravity control. Information recovery from a singularity. An Einstein-Rosen bridge linking a point just outside Earth orbit to Mars, where we can become a multi-planet species so the next time a rogue rock in space tries to snuff us out, we won’t be a lone, easy target.

Who knows the truth. She must be happy now that she’s in the spotlight, which means she’ll keep my secret safe. Not that she has any interest in destroying our lives, because we just don’t mean that much to her.

Anyway. I’m not in the movie. Thank god.
