Except…I think back to Mayfield, to what Mr. Humphries told us that night in the prayer room, and then I type six letters into his laptop—O L I V E R—and hit Enter.
He has SIRK up. He has my page up. I’m shocked to see my own face staring back at me, and I don’t move for a moment, then I look for the search function, my heart pounding so fast I’m sure it will give me away.
When I find it, I go to first name and type CLARA before pushing Enter. Nothing comes up. Not a single person at St. Anthony’s has that name.
“Fuck,” I whisper to myself.
I try it again, but it’s useless. If Clara is her real name, she doesn’t go here.
I’ve been so focused that I don’t hear the footsteps in the hallway until it’s almost too late. It’s only when I hear another shout outside, a warning, that I quickly type my own name, hit Enter, then step away from Mr. Humphries’s computer as he walks into the room.
“Jessica,” he says. “Did you forget something?”
Holding up my lanyard, I say, “It was under my chair, sir.”
“It should be around your neck,” he says, walking behind his desk and closing the laptop without looking at it.
“Sorry. See you next class.”
“I just caught your best friend making a scene in the hallway,” he says.
“Oh?”
I couldn’t sound guiltier if I tried.
He picks up his planner, turns a few pages, then looks at me.
“I should go,” I say, and Mr. Humphries holds my stare until I feel uncomfortable, refusing to look away until his next class starts to arrive and I can escape.
Chapter 106
“Did you do it?” Emily asks, and she can tell by my face that it’s not good news.
“She doesn’t go here—if her name’s even Clara.”
Emily sighs. “At least you tried. And we didn’t get caught.”
“I nearly did. He had my details up. I had to put it back the way it was.”
“That’s weird.”
“Not really. I was just in his class. He was probably making notes or something.”
Emily doesn’t say anything for a long time. She walks silently next to me until we’re back in the homeroom.
“Thanks for helping,” I say, and she nods but still doesn’t reply.
It’s not until Hanna arrives that Emily takes a deep breath and says, “Okay, I have a theory.”
We stare at her, waiting for her to explain, and when she doesn’t, Hanna says, “Go on then.”
“The newspaper articles…what if it wasn’t a student?”
“It has to be,” I say. “One was here, and the other was at Mayfield Lodge.”
Emily takes another deep breath and says, “Unless it was Mr. Humphries.”
