  39. About the Author

The redhead gasps into a giggle, and I can’t fight the cringe that lines my face. Ivy notices and shakes her head. “You don’t remember her name, do you?” she says, still whispering.

“Nope.”

A low, warm chuckle trickles into my ear. All smoke and Tennessee whiskey. The sensation prickles at my skin as it slides down my spine, settling heavily in my gut.

Motherfucker.

Clearing my throat, I fiddle with the pack of smokes and consider lighting up another one. It’s not like Mason actually gives a shit, not when there’s no one around but us. I think it’s just his weird way of mother-henning me.

I wince at the thought.

That was always Izzy’s role. Never his.

“I should probably head out.”

I snap my head up when Will pushes back his chair. Mason and Shawn pause in their conversation just as the girl climbs to her feet. My eyes widen when she makes her way to my side.

“Um.” I glance at Will.

His eyes are doing this weird twinkling thing, and I suddenly feel like I’m the butt of some joke. The redhead reaches out a pale hand, trailing her fingers down my shoulder. I don’t mean to tense up, but I’m just so damn confused right now.

I feel Ivy perk up next to me, but I don’t have a chance to figure out what that’s about. Because Will’s finishing the last of his beer and he’s doing that stupid swallowing thing that he seems prone to do, and I have no idea why this girl is now attached to me and not leaving with him.

“You good to drive?” Mason asks, standing before taking the empty bottle from him.

Will fiddles with the brown leather bracelet on his wrist. “Yeah, I’ve only had a few beers.”

“What are you doing?” I blurt out.

I feel everyone’s attention grind to a halt and hone in on me. Mason pauses a few feet away, and my cousin murmurs my name. It sounds like a warning. But it’s too late.

It’s too fucking late.

Will tilts his head, dirty blond hair falling over his eye. “Going home.”

This isn’t your fucking home, I want to shout.

“No,” I say stiffly. Stupidly. I wave a hand at the girl next to me and gently pry her off me as I stand. “It was just a one-time thing, dude. She’s all yours.” I chance a side-glance at the girl, finding amused brown eyes looking back at me.

At least this one’s sober.

“It’s cool. She knows the score.” I pause, cutting her another look. “Right?”

She shrugs, her smile not dimming in the least. “I can make an exception. Can’t you?”

I blink. Then I point at Will. “What about him?”

Why the hell does my voice sound like that?
