  39. About the Author

I remember his face sinking into my touch, his lips parting against my own.

I think about the way he felt in my arms as we came together, hard, yet soft. Putty in each other’s hands, yet unyielding in our need for one another.

I think about what he said—

“More like doomed.”

—and wonder if maybe he was right after all.

Maybe the only inevitability when it comes to us is, and always will be, heartbreak.

Maybe we’re just destined to repeat the same twisted cycle over and over and over again.

“Where there’s a will, there’s a way, right?”

What a fucking load of crap.

“It’s your dad.”

And just like that, time snaps forward.

My hand is now in Waylon’s, and he’s holding on to me like it might be the last thing he ever does. Bones creaking against bones.

“Way and Will. Will and Way. Always.”

Always, always, always.

Don’t let go, don’t let go, don’t let go...

“He’s getting out.”

—Please, don’t make me let you go.

Interlude

Are you still here? I hope so. I know this book didn’t end on a high note, but remember—this isn’t an ending. It’s a pause. A moment to breathe.

Their story is far from over.

Three and a half years. That’s how long it took from writing the first scene, to this moment. Writing the acknowledgments. So bear with me, folks. I’ve got a LOT of people to thank here, and I’m bound to ramble on forever.

Goose. Ben. Babe. Lover. Guess what? I did it. Finally. Thank you for being my walking thesaurus when I couldn’t find the words. Thank you for the tough love to just “do the thing” when all it felt like I’d never finish. Thank you for the patience not just these last few months, but these last few years. I know I drive you insane, talking about this book non-stop, or forgetting things...like being present with you. You’re the real MVP here. Love you.
