Chapters (39)
“I found him at the cemetery,” Jeremy says quietly, not taking his eyes off Mason as he combs his hair back. “He was already well on his way to drunk when I got there.”
I suck in a breath. Mason never goes there. Never.
I’m shaking my head. “Why?”
Jeremy swallows with a loud enough click to be heard across the room, but he doesn’t say anything.
I don’t realize I’ve taken a step back until there are knuckles brushing across my spine.
Will.
He followed me up. He’s here, still here.
My breaths start to pick up, becoming more and more uneven as each second passes where I don’t know what the fuck is going on.
“Did they find something?” I manage to gravel out.
Scenarios flit across my head, the worst case being that they found her body. That they finally found a corpse to put in her empty casket six feet under.
My chest aches with how sluggish my heart works to pump life into me.
I knew this day would come, and I thought I could handle it. But—
I can’t.
I can’t, I can’t, I can’t—
“Way.”
I blink, and I find all eyes on me.
I don’t want to be here, I think, taking another step back—
Only to find myself right up against Will’s hard, unrelenting body. His hand cups my waist and I can’t even find it in me to care. Not now. Not when—
“That’s not it,” Shawn says in a hard tone.
I realize then that it was his voice snapping me out of my near-panic.
He gives me a knowing look when I turn in his direction. He shakes his head.
They didn’t find her.
A sigh of relief has my shoulders slumping. I know I shouldn’t feel relieved. I’ve only hoped for the day we got closure for God knows how long. But to want it and to have it are two very fucking different things, I realize now.
Eyes burning, I nod. And then I nod again.
Forcing my feet to move, I pull away from Will, taking a step forward. Then another.
Jeremy finally lifts his head, a haunted look pulling horribly at his face. Eyes the color of amber drag up to mine, searing into them with their familiarity. God, it hurts to look at him.
Jeremy and Isobel Montgomery were born five minutes apart. But other than their eyes and thin frames, they shared no other physical qualities. Hardly any personality traits. Because where Jeremy would rather burrow down and fade into the background, his sister was a frizzy-haired firecracker who couldn’t hide even if she wanted.
