Reggie runs a hand through his thick hair. “Keep your phone on. I’ll be in touch if I hear anything.”
“Got it,” Ivy says, turning to head back to her car.
I give Reggie a nod. “We’ll find him.”
His dark wary gaze searches mine. “I know. It’s what we find when we get there that I’m worried about.” He smiles sadly. “That boy’s the only family I have left. I don’t know what I’d do if something happened to him.”
Sucking in my cheek, I give him another stilted nod before jogging to meet Ivy. If there was ever any doubt this man had anything to do with Waylon’s abuse growing up, the heartbreak and fear shining from his deep-set eyes completely obliterated it.
Cold rain pelts my face as I cross the short distance to Ivy’s car. The handle is slick against my palm as I throw open the passenger door and jump in.
The windshield wipers slide methodically over the glass. Soft rock music plays quietly through the speakers. Ivy’s knuckles are bone-white against the black steering wheel as she waits for me to buckle up.
“Ivy?”
She slowly turns her head toward me. Her mouth is a hard, bloodless line.
I search her bright green eyes. “He’ll be okay.”
Tears well in the corners of her eyes. “How do you know?”
My vision blurs. “Just drive.”
She nods jerkily and faces forward once more. Doing as I say, she shifts the car into reverse and pulls us back out onto the street.
In my head, I run through all the possible places he could be. If not a bar or friend’s house—
“Go to the bridge,” I blurt.
“What?”
“Just go. Drive to the top.”
She doesn’t say anything right away. Then, “He wouldn’t.”
I squeeze my eyes shut.
Big mistake.
The face from my nightmares stares back at me, eyes bulging and lifeless. Only they’re no longer the dull gray I’ve become accustomed to since that cold, wintry night last year, but the hollow hazel orbs of the boy from my childhood. The guy I spent what felt like hours kissing on a dirty bar floor only days ago. They stare through me, begging me, Why didn’t you stop me? Where were you? This is your fault.
“Will!” Ivy snaps.
I run my hands over my face before facing her. I get the feeling it’s not the first time she’s called my name.
She darts her gaze anxiously between me and the road.
I pinch the corners of my eyes, willing myself to calm down. “Sorry.”
