  39. About the Author

He nods, a weird look passing over his face. It’s gone before I can get too much of a read on it. He lets go of my shoulder and messes up my hair. “You’re a good kid. You come to me, okay? Any time.”

I give him a little shove. “Not a kid.”

He rolls his eyes, and fuck, if it doesn’t remind me of his nephew.

Reggie doesn’t talk about him much; usually only in passing. But I’ve caught enough far-off looks and frowns whenever Waylon’s name is brought up, that I’m willing to bet if Reggie was given the chance to fix whatever’s broken between them, he’d take it in a heartbeat.

He mutters something under his breath and turns away just as a pair of headlights appear in the driveway, tearing me from my thoughts. Tires squeal as a familiar blue car comes to a sudden stop.

Reggie straightens, and something bottoms out in my stomach as I watch Ivy jump out of the car. The engine’s still running, and she doesn’t even bother to shut the car door before her Docs are eating up the distance.

“Ivaiah?” Reggie says deeply when she ducks into the garage bay. “What’s wrong?”

Her green eyes look wide and brighter than ever against her pale, drawn face. She darts her gaze between us before landing on me. “I tried calling you.”

“My phone’s upstairs,” I say distantly, remembering that I left it to charge after talking to my mom for the better part of an hour. She and my dad leave for their cruise in the morning.

Why the hell would Ivy call me? I can’t help but wonder as dread worms its way through my body.

“What’s going on?” Reggie demands. He rushes out, “Is it Waylon? Is he okay?”

She opens her mouth. Closes it.

No...

“Ivy,” Reggie growls at the same time I take a step forward, joining him at his side. I don’t take my eyes off her.

Her voice shakes as she says, “I can’t find him.”

My brows bunch. I’m shaking my head. “What do you mean you can’t find him?”

She swallows and looks down at the ground. Her dark hair is damp and curls down her chest. “His phone’s off, and the guys haven’t seen or heard from him since Friday. I—”

I swear my heart stops beating.

Friday.

The night of the storm.

The night we—

Oh God.

“What the hell do you mean Friday?” Reggie says angrily. “It’s Tuesday, Ivaiah.”

“I know. I know, but I just got back today.” She lifts her gaze, and that’s when I see how fucking worried she is. I barely recognize the girl standing before me, eyes rounded with fear. She looks young and vulnerable and nothing like the snarky, tough-as-nails girl I’ve come to know these last few weeks.
