  39. About the Author

My eyes drift down of their own accord, taking in the white V-neck collar and the lines of his collarbones. His skin is all glowy and dewy and shit from the rain, and his nipples are dark, hard pinpoints behind the thin veil of his solid white tee.

“Earth to Way.”

Way. He’s still calling me Way.

His words register a second later. I blink and jerk my head up.

He arches a brow. “You good?”

My neck heats. Clearing my throat, I grunt out a barely intelligible, “Come on,” as I stomp my way toward the stairwell.

We’re quiet as we enter the apartment upstairs. I keep my mind blessedly blank as I rummage through my drawers for some sweats. He’d probably fit into Shawn’s clothes better, but something about that idea rubs me in all sorts of wrong ways. I tell myself it’s because Shawn’s a private guy. He’d be pissed I didn’t ask first.

I almost believe that makes a difference to me.

In the living room, I toss Will the black Stones t-shirt I found buried in my dresser and a pair of gray joggers. They’re the loosest ones I could find because like hell I’m letting him borrow my underwear. Dudes don’t wear other dudes’ boxers.

He looks down at the shirt, and a soft, surprised smile appears on his face.

“What?” I ask suspiciously.

He waves the shirt. “How’d you know?”

“Know what?”

“I love this band.”

A rock lodges in my throat. I dart my gaze away. “Of course you do,” I mutter. Will and his damn dad-rock. “Keep it. Haven’t worn it in years.” More like never. It was one of many gifts my uncle tried to bestow upon me when he took me in at sixteen. It always smelled of guilt to me, so I never wore it.

“The sticker’s still on it.”

I frown, following his finger to where it points to a price sticker plastered to the hem.

Will’s mouth twitches. “If I didn’t know better, I’d think you bought me a gift.”

A sneer breaks across my face before I can stop it. “Then it’s a good thing you know better.”

He gives a low whistle. “And now a compliment to boot! Who are you and what have you done with the Waylon I’ve come to know and dread?”

“Hilarious,” I deadpan.

Will doesn’t appear to hear me as he gives an exaggerated frown. “Shit, maybe that branch did more damage than I thought.” He cocks his head. “You’re taller than I expected for a munchkin.”

I blink. “Excuse me?”

His eyes light up. “Or maybe...are you the man behind the curtain? Tell me, Wizard,” he says into a secret smile, “have I earned my heart yet?”

What in the ever-loving—“Branch?” My heart pounds.
