“I guess I’ll see you at your follow-up, then, as long as you stay out of here. Tell your sister hello for me.” Dr. Melendez offered a friendly smile before leaving the room.

Gretchen was then alone. Alone in the silence with her thoughts, fake memories, and a hundred different outcomes for tomorrow. But all she could really focus on was taking a nap when she got home. She was so tired from everything. Getting dressed was slow going, and her tight jeans were a struggle she wasn’t prepared for. By the time Gretchen was done, she sat winded on the edge of the hospital bed. She messaged Amanda to come pick her up and made pleasant small talk with the nurse who stopped in with her discharge papers. Her head still ached slightly and buzzed with an odd sense of fatigue, a feeling she would never be able to describe. Amanda walked through the door no more than five minutes after Gretchen hit Send, a nurse hot on her heels.

“Are you here to take Ms. Mills home?” the nurse said.

Amanda looked like she wanted to ignore him but nodded instead. He left after getting confirmation.

“How did you get here so fast?”

“I was already on my way. What the hell happened? You can’t keep scaring me like this.”

The nurse returned with a wheelchair and motioned for Gretchen.

“I’m fine,” Gretchen said to both of them, already making her way to the door. She just wanted to be home.

“Hospital rules,” he said, staring her down until she sat in the chair.

“I had a seizure, but I’m fine. They adjusted my meds, and hopefully I won’t have another episode.”

Amanda walked quickly to beat Gretchen and her chauffeur to the elevators. She pressed the button and turned back. “What caused this one?”

Gretchen bit the inside of her cheek and refused to meet Amanda’s eye. “Jax and I fought.”

“Jesus Christ,” Amanda said under her breath. “I’m going to have to keep you two apart until you get the doctor’s okay.”

“That won’t be a problem.”

Amanda looked at her in shocked confusion. “What do you mean?” They stepped into the empty elevator.

“She left for good this time.” She looked at Amanda, tears blurring her face. “I won’t stop fighting for our marriage, but she won’t come around anytime soon.”

Amanda placed her hand on Gretchen’s shoulder. “I’m sorry, sis.”

“Don’t be, because nothing’s over. Not yet.” Gretchen’s voice came out surprisingly strong in spite of her fatigue. “The divorce papers were never signed. Jax found them this morning after we woke up together.”

“Oh…”

“Oh.” The deep male voice sounded out of place. Gretchen shot a glare over her shoulder.

No one said another word until Gretchen was at the front of the hospital and Amanda was helping her into her car.
