“You shouldn’t be making flyers or menus. We all know it. We knew after your first week here. I think Randy treats you the way he does to keep you in check.”
“Do I look like someone who needs to be kept in check?”
“To Randy, yeah. He obviously knows your dick is bigger.” Seth started shaking his head immediately. “I should not have said that. I’m sorry again.”
“It’s okay. Again. Why don’t you go have some more pizza?”
“I think I will.”
“I think you should.”
“Thanks again. For the pizza.”
She hummed and watched Seth slink awkwardly away. She replayed the short conversation over and over again in her head as she got back to work. Knowing other people saw the way she was treated somehow made her feel better, like she wasn’t overly sensitive or imagining things.
She finished up her workday with no more interruptions. Randy only walked around and made his presence known once, and he chose someone else to hover over that time. Jax packed up her stuff, ran out the door at five, and headed straight to the liquor store. She grabbed a six-pack of dark lager for herself and Wyatt, and a bottle of sweet wine for Carly to enjoy when she was no longer pregnant. Jax knew not every pregnant woman was the same, but Gretchen couldn’t wait to have a glass of chardonnay after Caleb was born. Jax was in front of Wyatt’s simple bungalow before six o’clock.
“Hey, bud,” Jax said the moment Wyatt swung the door open.
He threw his arms around her and pulled her into a tight bear hug. “I’m so glad you could make it. She’s driving me crazy.”
“She’s your pregnant wife,” Jax said firmly. “Imagine how she feels.”
“Get your ass in here.” Wyatt held the door open for Jax.
Jax made a beeline for Carly, who was propped up on the sofa and bigger than Jax could’ve ever thought possible. Her eyes were on Carly’s belly as she approached. “You look—”
“Don’t even say it, and you’re gonna have to come down to me.”
Jax couldn’t contain her smile as she bent to kiss Carly’s rosy cheek. “You look wonderful,” Jax said quietly and cautiously. “I bet you’re ready for this to be over, though.” Jax took a seat next to Carly and lifted Carly’s bare feet onto her lap. Without a second thought, she started to give Carly a foot massage.
“Holy shit.” Carly threw her head back and moaned. “Your hands are better than Wyatt’s.”
Jax shot Wyatt a wink. “They’re not better—I’ve just had more practice with pregnant women’s feet.”
“And you couldn’t bestow me with this special technique a few months ago?” Wyatt threw his hands up and walked to the kitchen.
“How’s Gretchen?”
“She’s okay.”
