Shawn pulls back from Finn, holding her by her shoulders, then he smooths down the top of her hair and shakes his head. “Your hair looks like shit,” he says.

“Yeah, well, you got fat,” Finn says, poking him in the stomach. “I thought you started lifting weights?”

Katriina rips off a paper towel, smiling to herself at the thought of Shawn lifting weights. Maybe Finn doesn’t know Shawn as well as she thinks she does. But then she sees Shawn push back the sleeve of his T-shirt, flexing his bicep.

“I’m crushing it. See?”

Finn touches his arm and makes her lips into a little round o. “Crush harder,” she says, rolling her eyes.

“Hey, it’s only been four weeks. Give me a break.”

Katriina jerks around so abruptly that the paper towel roll falls to the floor, unravelling in a long white ribbon before stopping at Finn’s and Shawn’s feet. “Whoops,” she says. Everyone turns to look at her. A bright coin of blood shimmers on the counter beneath her upturned finger; another spreads across her new dress just about her navel. She picks up the roll and with one hand starts to awkwardly wind the paper towel back around it, waiting for someone to come over and help her. But no one does.

Later, when everyone moves into the dining room, they all stop and stare at Kate’s empty chair. “You take it, Finn,” Walter says eventually, waving his hand dismissively. “No point in getting all sentimental about it.” Finn sits down reluctantly, and suddenly Katriina can see how much she resembles Kate, in a way that Nicki never has. Something about her eyes, the way they seem so far away. Nicki might be difficult to handle at the best of times, but at least she was always present.

Katriina knows the evening’s seating arrangement is like a game of Jenga: one piece out of place and the whole thing comes tumbling down. So she steers Nicki and Hamish to the other end of the table, leaving a buffer of kids between them and Finn. Katriina, her finger wrapped in a paper towel secured with duct tape, seats herself between Tommy and Petey, making sure they don’t gang up on Ross, who sits quietly next to Nicki, watching her cut up his steak for him. Walter sits on one side of Finn, Shawn on the other. Just like Katriina knew they would. As they settle in to their plates of food, Finn passes Shawn the bottle of HP Sauce and he dumps a little pool on his plate, leaving Katriina to wonder since when has Shawn liked HP Sauce? It seems like today she is finding out all kinds of new things about her husband.
