Across the table from Katriina, Milan and Vienna are trading meatballs according to some obscure, predetermined shape system. London, who is a vegetarian of course, watches them with a look of disgust. “So sick,” she says. “I can’t even believe you’re touching those, let alone eating them.” But Milan and Vienna ignore her, lost in their own private twin world.
“Be quiet, London,” Nicki says, pushing Ross’s plate back towards him. “You don’t hear us complaining about your gross-looking kwin-noa.”
“It’s actually pronounced keen-wah,” Finn says, dishing some salad onto her plate.
“Whatever you say, Finn,” Nicki says, sawing violently through her steak. “Everyone knows you’re the smart one.”
“Come on now, Nick,” says Hamish. He puts his hand on her arm. “Don’t murder the meat, for chrissake.”
Shrugging off his hand, Nicki leans forward and stares at Finn. From across the room Katriina can feel her vibrating with anticipation, like a jungle cat preparing to pounce. “Hey, Finn,” Nicki says. “I’ve been wondering. How did Thunder Bay News get that photo of Mom?”
Finn snorts in disbelief. “You think I gave the media a picture of Mom?”
“Finn wouldn’t do that, Nicki,” says Shawn. Coming to Finn’s rescue, of course.
“She was the only one taking pictures at your wedding.”
Katriina looks up from her plate, startled. She hasn’t seen the picture, but knowing that it was taken at her wedding suddenly makes it seem personal, as though someone was deliberately trying to put a black mark on a happy memory. Who else could it have been but Finn? A swell of anger rises up in her chest.
“Mom was taking pictures, too,” says Shawn.
“Not of herself, dummy,” says Nicki.
Finn slams her wine glass on the table and leans forward as well, mirroring Nicki. “How could I have given it to them when I didn’t even know what had happened?” she asks. “You know, because no one bothered to tell me.”
Nicki shrugs. “We didn’t expect you’d care.”
“Girls,” says Walter, his brow furrowing deeply. “This isn’t productive.”
How can they be so self-centred? thinks Katriina. Can’t they see their father is in pain?
“Anyway, I just assumed it was from your Facebook,” Finn says. “You’ve got all kinds of crap on there.”
“There are no pictures of Mom on my Facebook.”
“Sure.” Finn holds her wine glass out to Shawn, who is pouring some for Walter. “I’ll have a little more,” she says.
“Yeah, great, have more wine,” says Nicki.
“Thanks, I think I will,” says Finn.
“You might as well get completely hammered. Nothing bad ever happens when Finn Parker gets drunk.”
“At least then it won’t hurt as much when you stab me in the back.”
“Oh, that’s funny. I stabbed you in the back.”
“That’s enough,” says Walter abruptly.
