He nods thoughtfully, unaware of my inner turmoil. It makes me feel even worse, knowing I’m keeping the truth from him. Just like I am with Cami.
But I’m not ready to face it yet.
When I am, I’ll tell them.
“That’s probably a smart idea,” Kael says, sounding relieved. He combs his fingers through his hair, avoiding my eyes as he continues, “And actually … well, if we’re not doing that …” He releases a breath and looks back at me. “I’ve been thinking about talking with Cami. I’d like to … to explain my behavior to her and clear the air between us. I might do that this afternoon instead.”
I’m surprised—and delighted—to hear this. “I think that’s a really good idea.”
“Any chance you know where I can find her?” Kael asks. “I still have a few things I want to finish up with in here, but after that, it makes no sense to put it off.”
I don’t envy Kael having that conversation. It was hard enough for him to admit to me that he feels guilty for the indirect role his dad played in her parents’ deaths. But it’s also an indication of his character that he’s willing to talk it out with her, to explain why he has trouble being around her. If they can get past this, it’ll make things easier for everyone.
“As far as I know, she’s with Ward right now,” I tell him. “After that, she was going to come and meet me here, so if you stay put, she’ll find you.” I cock my head to the side and add, “After your talk, can you ask her to head back to our room? I’ll wait for her there.”
Kael agrees and we say our goodbyes. Once I’m out in the corridor, I consider my next move. I could go and check if Cami is finished with Ward, and if so, see whether he’ll have anything else to tell me. Or I could go to the thermal springs and force myself to have a much-needed moment of peace. Or I could—
A quiet meow interrupts my deliberation and I glance along the tunnel to see Dinger sitting in the middle of the path, staring at me. As soon as he has my attention, he rises and turns around, disappearing around the corner.
With a sigh, I trail after him, grumbling under my breath, “I never should have let you out this morning.”
