“Mama, talk to me. Are you okay?” Nora waited, but her mother didn’t say anything. “You’re bleeding. Please, let’s go to the police first.”
“I can’t—not yet anyway.” Eloise feared what Sam would do. “The police always give the man the benefit of the doubt. They would tell us to go back home and work it out. I will never do such a thing. Lisa’s home is the best place for us. Please try and understand.”
“Anything to get away from Sam!”

Nora shuddered in bed. She turned over, unable to sleep. Memories from a year ago continued to shake her. She hated Sam. What better day than today, Thanksgiving, for the police to arrest him! With those thoughts, her eyelids became heavy.

Chapter 15
November 1969
Alone letter arrived in Jorden’s mailbox the day after Thanksgiving. Usually Alex’s letters came in batches of two or three. Maybe the holiday had something to do with it. She tore open the envelope.
I already feel remorse for the last letter I sent you. I’m referring to the one about my being Catholic and the Pre-Cana classes. I haven’t even heard from you but I feel I have upset you which wasn’t my intention. I shouldn’t write this, but I will. I want you to know my religion won’t interfere with our marriage. Honestly, it won’t come between us. I want to make you happy. I can shut my eyes and see your face. I love you. You’re most important.
Jorden closed her eyes. She had to be more understanding of his Catholic faith. The doctrine anchored him to his family and upbringing. Like breathing, this was part of his life. She would honor her commitment to convert to his Catholic faith—but she was happy he was also willing to bend. Her eyes darted back to the page.
Now the good news! I got my R & R in Hawaii. It’s not the date I put in for but I hope we can make it work, January 17 through January 21. A couple months gives us some time to work out the details and get reservations. I can’t wait to see you, just to hold you in my arms.
“Yes, Yes, Yes!” Jorden danced around the kitchen. She stopped to look at the calendar; January 17 was a Saturday. She had to call Madison.
“Guess what?”
“I don’t have a clue. Spit it out,” Madison demanded.
“We’re going in January!” Jorden stammered.
“Going where?”
“To Hawaii!” Jorden exploded.
“You and Alex?”
“Who else! I can’t believe it.” Jorden twirled around again.
“Great! You two deserve it. Now—get yourself over here and pick up those birth control pills. When did your last period end?” Madison quizzed Jorden.
“Yesterday.”
