- Epilogue
“How’s she doing? Is Eloise still working at your office?”
“Eloise is well—even happy. I keep forgetting how long it’s been since we’ve talked. Eloise and the major seem to be an item. I predict a marriage proposal in the near future.”
Jorden leaned forward. “Does Nora like the major?”
“I’m not sure. Nora came by the office late last Friday afternoon. I was finishing up an old project when I heard them argue. I tried not to listen but couldn’t help but hear them.”
“What were they arguing about?”
“Major Hawkins, I think. I shouldn’t say anymore.”
“Please do,” Jorden responded. “I really want to know how Nora is doing.”
“Eloise and Nora didn’t know I was there. I couldn’t hear everything—just when they raised their voices. Nora seemed terribly upset,” Matt admitted.
“Go on, please,” Jorden insisted.
“Well, Eloise wanted Nora to spend the night with her friend, Lisa, so she could go out to dinner with Major Hawkins. This didn’t set well with Nora. I think she is afraid of her mother getting involved with another man. You remember when I told you how Sam almost destroyed their lives?” Matt looked at Jorden.
“I sure do.”
“He’s still a real threat and it’s not a good situation, from what Major Hawkins tells me.”
“How awful,” Jorden uttered after Matt finished.
“Enough about them. It’s a great day—let’s go for a drive.” Cheerfully, Matt led Jorden to his Dodge Dart.

Chapter 46
February 1970
Nora arrived at her mother’s office late Friday afternoon. She was upset and threw her book bag on the floor next to her mother’s desk. Eloise looked up. “There you are! I’m glad Cheryl’s mother dropped you off before six. I hope you thanked her for the ride.”
“Of course I did, I know how to be nice.” Nora scowled at her mother.
“What are you trying to tell me?” Her mother looked clueless.
“Mama, how can you do this to me? I don’t want to spend tonight with Lisa! You don’t think I know what’s going on with you and Major Hawkins, but I do. He’s over at our place every day, eating dinner with us on a nightly basis.”
“The major’s here for our protection—ever since Sam got out of jail. The major’s been good to you.”
“Yeah! So was Sam when he wanted something.” Nora didn’t think there was such a thing as a good man. “Why do I have to spend the night at Lisa’s?”
“Because the major and I want to go out and I’m not leaving you alone.”
“I’m fourteen, old enough to be alone!”
“I know. That’s what worries me!”
