- Epilogue
Matt held Jorden’s arm to stop her from getting swept backward. After he paid the bill, they dodged the crowd trying to get outside, only to find a raging storm of wind and rain.
“Let’s run to the car.”
It took Matt over thirty minutes to drive to her apartment. Jorden could see the outline of the complex through the fogged windshield while rain resonated against the car’s roof. “What time is it?”
“It’s almost eleven. Don’t worry, you won’t turn into a pumpkin. Come on, let’s make a dash for it.”
Jorden’s eyes adjusted to the dim light. “You’re on. I bet I can beat you to the entrance.”
Matt was out of the car before she had reached for her door handle. Jorden couldn’t believe it when she watched him arrive at the entrance seconds before her. He held the door open with a slight bow.
“How did you beat? You tricked me!”
Matt laughed. “Don’t be a sore loser.” He caught Jorden’s elbow and guided her up the stairs. “It’s quiet.”
“Weekends always are. They’re the most peaceful time. Tonight it should be even quieter since Emma Lynn went home, and Darby and Nate are at a party. Want to come in?”
“Sure.” Matt helped her with the door.
“Would you like something to drink?” Jorden checked the refrigerator. “All we have are Coca Colas and orange juice. What’s your pleasure?”
“I’ll have a Coke.” Matt reached for an album by Kenny Rogers.
Jorden pulled out two bottles, popped the metal tops, and poured them into glasses. Matt stepped up behind her. She froze when she heard the silver chain reverberate against the glass. Alex had given her the bracelet last winter. The sound caught her off guard. For a second a shiver traveled down her spine as Alex’s image flashed before her. What was she doing?
“I didn’t mean to startle you.” Matt backed away.
Matt’s voice brought Jorden back to the moment. “You . . . you didn’t . . . I’m fine.” She twisted away before she handed him a glass.
“Thank you.” Lightly, he touched her hand. “Come on, let’s sit down and enjoy the music.”
Jorden and Matt sat in a companionable silence on the couch, listening to music, and sipping their drinks. He reached for her hand. She could feel his fingers envelope hers with a soft stroke. To her amazement, her fingers responded in a swaying motion to the rhythm of the music. It was as if her fingers took over, longing for the feel of another person.
Matt moved closer. Their shoulders touched while he reached for the softness of her face. Slowly, their lips met.
In the background, footsteps and laughter rang out. A key turned and the door opened. Jorden scooted over. Darby and Nate’s eyes widened when they saw Jorden and Matt opposite them.
