  73. Epilogue

“I know, but we have to . . . let go . . .” Matt’s voice trailed off.

Jorden knew he was right. This was it. She let her eyes roam his four walls and the hardwood flooring for the last time. Matt was tidy. Even the hardwood floor shined. These thoughts kept her mind busy, stopping the tears as they left his house. But pain hit when she watched him drive away from her apartment building. Tears rolled onto her blouse. Then, uncontrollable sobs rocked her.

Darby and Emma Lynn had gone out so Jorden had the apartment to herself. She needed this time to reflect. The phone rang around nine. Jorden ran to the kitchen. “Hello?”

“Hi, Hon. It’s me. I’m in Spartanburg, South Carolina, almost five hours away.”

“Are you driving to Columbus tonight?”

“I’d like to, but I’m beat. It’s raining hard and visibility is zero. I’m in a motel right now.” Alex sounded tired. “I can’t wait to see you, but looks like I won’t get there until around noon tomorrow.”

Jorden relaxed. She tried to find the right words. “Just get here in one piece. I’ve waited this long—I can wait a few more hours. I love you.” The words almost stuck in her throat.

“I love you, too. See you soon.”

Jorden hung up. How was she going to do this—make it work?

She showered, cleaned her face and decided to read one of Alex’s latest letters before trying to sleep.

Not long now. I can count the days on my fingers. I like to think about our plans. After our wedding day, a week in the Pocono Mountains sounds wonderful. Then we can stop by my house in New York and yours in New Jersey.

Jorden had never been to the northeastern part of Pennsylvania, especially the Poconos.

It’s good we have two months before we get married. I can take care of the little details and you’ll have the same opportunity at your home in New Jersey. I’m looking forward to visiting with people I haven’t seen in the last year and just having time off.

After we’re married, don’t let me get into bad habits. We’ll be able to talk and be honest with each other. You’re important and deserve the best. I want us to have a good time, especially the first year. I can’t believe I am so lucky to fall in love with someone like you. You mean the world to me. I realize falling in love is beautiful, but we have power over each other. All my life, I will try to be the best husband. I promise I’ll try and make you the happiest ever. My hopes and dreams all look forward to seeing you soon and our coming marriage in August. . .
