- Epilogue
Emma Lynn reached for Jorden’s arm. “Don’t let Darby bug you. We all know you and Matt care a lot for each other. All we’re saying, is don’t throw away what could be. I know you think you’re not the perfect match—but who is? Think about it. Even though I don’t know Alex, I wonder if he’s the right one for you.”
The words struck with force. Jorden watched each roommate drive off. Why did they keep pushing her? Did they see something she was missing?
To console herself, Jorden reached for Alex’s latest letter—only to find this wasn’t the best decision, either.
Hon, don’t be disappointed, but I think it’s best if I fly home to Albany first, get my car and then drive down to Columbus. It will make everything much easier. I’ll have time to see my family and get the Mustang ready for the long trip. This will give us more time together in Columbus with no pressure from my family. I’ll call you as soon as my flight arrives in California. Please try and understand. I know you want me to come to Columbus first—but trust me—this is for the best.
Jorden knew his words were logical, but they were also hard to accept.
Saturday morning Matt drove into the apartment complex at seven sharp. No one else was driving in or out of the parking area at the time. Jorden purposely wanted to get an early start to avoid anyone seeing them drive off together. She didn’t want rumors to get back to her roommates. Jorden looked out the peephole; Matt was wearing blue jeans and a sweatshirt, just like her. Not wanting to carry much, she took a small tote bag filled with makeup and two changes of clothes. The weather forecast predicted rain. Right now the sun beamed into the apartment’s front window. She could feel the warmth on her neck when she opened the door.
“You’re ready! I’m impressed—just one bag!”
“Thank you. Let me get my hooded jacket. It’s probably going to be chilly. We should take this warm sunshine with us.”
Matt had the door open when Jorden reappeared. “Ready now?”
“Almost.” Jorden stepped into the kitchen. Last night she had washed and dried all the dishes, even the coffee pot. She knew the checks and re-checks were being used as a stalling mechanism. Was this all a terrible mistake?
“What’s keeping you? I thought you wanted to leave early.”
“I’m coming.”
Matt grinned as he drove off. “I don’t think anyone saw us. You’re safe; no one knows you’re running off with your wild escort.”
“You tease too much! Please . . . I just want some coffee—not your wisecracks.”
“Okay. We’ll get you coffee.”
“Thank you. Look! There’s a Krystal. Turn in there!”
