- Epilogue
“The Cornish hen is so tender. How do you do it, Mom?” Carrie asked. “I’d love to have the recipe.”
Margo smiled. “I’d be happy to write it down for you.”
Carrie reached for another serving of the Cornish hen, plus two heaping spoons of saffron rice, and another dinner roll. Everyone watched, including Scott.
“Carrie, what are you doing?” Scott asked.
Carrie replied without appearing to be taken aback by his remark. “I’m starved. I haven’t eaten since early this morning, besides—I’m eating for two.”
Scott chuckled. “You look like you’re eating for twins.” He reached out his hand to stroke her bulging belly.
“Don’t touch!” Carrie slapped at his hand, but an affectionate smile played on her lips.
Jorden couldn’t help but smile at Carrie and Scott. In spite of Scott’s rude comments, Jorden sensed the couple enjoyed prodding each other. This time Carrie seemed the winner, with Scott on the verge of an apology.
“Let her be, Scott,” Margo piped up. “She’s hungry. Let’s change the subject, shall we? How are your house plans coming along?”
“You’re building a new place?” Alex asked with a note of surprise in his voice.
“The plans are done and the construction begins early June.”
“I can’t wait,” Carrie said, glowing. “I’m going to have a fabulous kitchen with all state of the art appliances and lots of space.”
The conversation continued to center on the couple’s construction plans. Jorden found Carrie and Scott entertaining as they tried to outdo each other. Alex got in a few comments, but Jorden didn’t say two words—and no one attempted to bring her into the discussion. For her, it was a relief when the meal ended. Her nerves eased, and the flutters in her stomach settled down.
Jorden helped Mrs. Whelan and Carrie clear the table. Alex and Scott pitched in as well stacking dishes onto a cart from the butler pantry. Carrie proceeded to wash the dishes, Jorden dried, and Mrs. Whelan put them away.
“Well, Mom, can you believe we’re already done?” Carrie raised her voice, apparently to make sure the men overheard her. “See what happens when everyone chips in?”
“Thank you all! I’ll be right back. My feet are killing me; I need to change into my slippers.” Margo turned and climbed up the back stairs.
“Jorden, can you do me a favor?” Carrie asked.
“Sure.”
“Help me take these serving dishes to the butler pantry. They go in the lower cabinet under the bar area. Thanks. I’ll be right out with the rest.” Carrie handed Jorden three large platters.
