  73. Epilogue

Jorden marveled at the Manor House as she and Alex walked toward the entrance. Looking up, she could see how the central tower stood out over the entrance with two smaller towers on either side. The dark stained wood contrasted with a slightly lighter trim, which created an enticing atmosphere.

“Unbelievable. I can’t wait to see the inside,” Jorden said with fascination.

“Well come on. I’m sure Rich and Kim are waiting for us.” Alex opened the front door with a gentleman’s flourish. Whiffs of roasted garlic and other spices stirred Jorden’s appetite. Light dinner music played on a baby grand piano. The pianist was dressed in a black tuxedo. His fingers flew over the keys—it looked so simple.

The maitre d’ stepped forward. He also wore a tuxedo but of a slightly different shade.

“Can I help you? Do you have a reservation?”

“Yes, we do. It’s under Rich Critten.”

“Your party is here. Follow me.” He bowed, sweeping his right arm out to show the way.

They followed the maitre d’ across the hardwood floor. Jorden was impressed with how each table had its own privacy. Amore’s, their favorite restaurant, held special memories, but it could not compare to this refined dining. She was glad she had brought her best dress. Alex hadn’t told her it would be this formal.

As they reached their table, Jorden could see Rich and Kim huddled together laughing. Jorden wished she and Alex could have the same intimacy instead of sharing the night with a couple she hadn’t even met.

“Here we are. Madame. Let me help you with your chair.”

“Thank you.” Jorden sat down in an upholstered, high back chair with a soft, comfortable cushion. She took in the elegant table. Each setting had crystal water and wine glasses and starched white linen napkins folded upright in the center of the plates. Distracted, she hardly noticed the maitre d’ hand her a leather-bound menu trimmed with gold. His voice brought her back to reality.

“Your server will be Ralston. Have a wonderful dinner.” He bowed and left.

Jorden sat across from Kim and Rich. She envied Kim’s rosy complexion. Her large blue eyes contrasted with her rich black hair. Short curly locks surrounded her face in a chic cut and her subtle curves added to her charismatic and outgoing personality. At first glance, Rich, tall and thin with a thick head of red hair, appeared to be more reserved than his wife. Jorden decided they looked like opposites.

Alex made the introductions, and they all exchanged greetings.

“Isn’t this something!” Rich opened the conversation. “I’ve never been here before—have you Alex?”

“Once, quite a while ago. Peter and I brought dinner dates on senior prom night. We were trying to impress them, but it cost us a fortune. To top it off, my date never even went out with me again.”
