- Epilogue
“Go for it Eleanor!” shouted an older woman. Jorden couldn’t help but laugh along with the others.
Helen continued, “Divorce wasn’t in the cards. Franklin’s mother, Sara Delano Roosevelt, threatened to disinherit him if he divorced Eleanor. Franklin didn’t want to put his political career in jeopardy, so he pledged to never see Lucy Mercer again. But in the end, it wasn’t quite the truth since Franklin did see Lucy in later years. To the first question, yes, Lucy Mercer was here the day Franklin Roosevelt died. Franklin’s daughter, Anna, had arranged for Lucy to be here. The family tried to keep this quiet when Roosevelt died, but it became public three years ago, in 1966. Are there any more questions?” Helen asked once more. Seeing no hands raised, she exited into the entrance hall where she smiled and curtsied. “Thank you for your interest and all your questions. Come again.” Her smile broadened as they clapped.
Mary looked warmly at Jorden and Alex. “Thank you. What a treat!”
“Shall we head into Warm Springs and get something to eat?” Alex suggested.
Mary demurred, “I’ve had a great day, but I’m tired. What about taking me back to the apartment, and you two go out and get something. Maybe we could stop and pick up a sandwich for me?”
“Are you sure, Mom? It won’t take us long to get something in Warm Springs.”
“No, I’m sure. My feet hurt!”
She knew her mom was trying to let them have time together. Jorden couldn’t help but smile. They picked up a hamburger, fries, and a chocolate milkshake for Mary. Jorden got her mother settled in before Alex drove them off to Amore’s for dinner.
“I like your mother. She’s fun.”
“I know she liked you. Mom was on good behavior—thank goodness! She could have put you under the microscope.”
After a nice dinner, Alex steered them towards their favorite park. Jorden prized these special moments, talking and snuggling with Alex. She hated to return to her apartment.
“Come on in. It’s almost two, I’m sure Mom is asleep.”
“When’s your mother leaving?”
“Tomorrow—I think around eleven.”
“Then, I’d better go. I’ll drive over before she leaves.”
“I know she’d like to see you again.”
“How about nine? I’ll treat you and your mother to breakfast?”
“Good. Maybe we’ll have some time after Mom leaves.”
“You bet we will.” Alex leaned over and kissed her.
They ended up having a mid-morning brunch. Jorden had to admit she’d enjoyed her mother’s visit.
“This has been a real treat. Thank you.” Mary gave Jorden and Alex bear-hugs. “I’m so glad you’re going to be a part of our family.”
“Me too,” Alex replied.
