Her back arched beneath my hand as I caught her, and I kissed her throat. “Wildflower,” I whispered, kissing under her chin. “Breathe.” Her chest deflated with a shuddering exhale, and I stroked the indent of her spine as she inhaled and relaxed against me. “Okay?”
“Perfect,” she responded thickly.
I chuckled silently and licked her racing pulse. “Indeed. I love you.”
Nails gently scraped over the ridges in my shoulders. I pushed her so close that her tits were squashed against my chest. Then I pulled her hair aside to better access her scent, her skin, my lips glossing over the light sheen of sweat at her collarbone.
I’d asked her almost every other month for the past decade, but her answer was always the same. Her refusal didn’t hurt me. I knew it was not due to a lack of faith in me but rather a lack of faith in a union that had broken and robbed her of everything she’d once known so unexpectedly.
It also didn’t deter me.
One day, she would surrender. Not to please me, or she would have already agreed to it, but because she was ready. So I would keep asking—and I would keep waiting.
“Marry me, wildflower.” Tilting her chin down, I whispered to her lips, “I want to make you my wife.” I didn’t brace for her response. I did what I always did and kissed her before she could give me that teasing smile of hers and laugh as she told me no.
But Aster didn’t laugh. She didn’t smile.
My counterpart returned my kiss, and so softly that my lips fell still over hers.
My heart lost its beat, and my eye burned when she gripped my face to kiss the tip of my nose. “Then please do.”
