I was pushed against the wall, his forehead almost touching mine. “Couldn’t?” he taunted. “Or was it that you merely did not wish to?” His fingers brushed my cheek, and the heat of his rage blended with the acidic scent of fear he could not hide. “Do you have any idea what you’ve now brought upon us?” he asked, and so gently, I found it hard to hold his gaze. “What you’ve brought upon me?”

“Scythe is the son of Helvectus, isn’t he?” I asked with a twinge in my chest. “He’s a wolf, and his missing eye was—”

“No.” Rorn’s fingers dropped. He glowered, gritting, “My brother had no son.”

“None that he would’ve shared with the rest of us, Rorn.” I grasped his wrist, urging, “Think about it.”

“Think about it?” He flung my touch away. “I’ve done nothing but think about you with him for never-ending days. He will lose more than his remaining eye for that, Astrantia, and for daring to come here to arouse suspicion in my people.”

“Oh, they’re your people now?” I foolishly sneered. “It’s just as I thought then. You brought me back merely to put me on display and to make sure I’m not there with him.”

His glower eased. “That’s not true and…” Growling, he smacked the stone wall beside my head, and lurched backward. “If you wish to prove your loyalty to this kingdom and for me to stand a chance at forgiving you, just do as I say and return to your fucking parlor.”

As much as I still cared, I didn’t care enough to want or need his forgiveness.

“I don’t want your forgiveness, Rorn. He’s my mate,” I blurted, for I had nothing else. Nothing that might help. “That’s why I found it so easy to do what I did. That’s why I cannot give you what you want,” I admitted softly. “Even if I could forgive you.”

“Enough,” Rorn rasped, paling more by the second.

“No, he’s my mate, and if you harm him, if you kill him…” I swallowed thickly. “You know damned well you might as well kill me, too.”

Rorn staggered back. His eyes swept over me before he stalked down the hall.

Scythe

The dungeon was just as small and miserable as I remembered.

I stared at the cell across from the one I’d been locked within, unable to forget the way she’d stood there, staring at me with tear-stained eyes. Staring at me with so much regret, it had stalked my dreams ever since.

We hadn’t asked for much. I hadn’t asked for anything. But she had feared we wouldn’t make it on our own. So she’d asked for help—for just enough to get us by while she grieved a mate she was never allowed to publicly claim.
