Aster fell into me and splayed a hand over my chest, fingers and eyes searching.

Before Olivianna could say another word, I ordered, “Tell no one of her,” and then I lifted my thief of a female into my arms to take her home. “I mean it.”

EIGHTEEN

Aster

In silence, the wolf carried me uphill to the apartment.

Content to stare at him, to trace the hair that punctured the skin of his rigid jaw with my eyes, I didn’t mind. I could scarcely believe it—that I was here and in his arms.

Noting the severe arch of his ear, I mumbled, “You cut your hair.” I reached for the thick darkness he now wore cropped close to his scalp, but my heavy arm fell when we encountered the stairs.

The loss of the shoulder-length strands had hardened him, revealing his every fierce angle and breathtaking feature. I couldn’t decide if I preferred it. I couldn’t decide if anything but his mere existence mattered.

The apartment door slammed, and I stiffened.

“Are you hurt?” Was the first and only thing he said before throwing me down onto the bed.

I bounced, wincing as the ache that had dulled reminded me of its presence. “No, but I—”

“You dare return after all this time fucking reeking of another male?” A barked laugh punched from him, but it was void of any humor.

It was riddled with throaty disgust.

I pushed to my elbows. “Scythe—”

“Don’t worry, I’ll make careful work of remedying that. Though I must warn you”—he flicked his hand, and my eyes widened as black claws replaced his fingers—“there will be no saving this gown to better hide your transgressions, and I’m not fucking sorry.”

Before I could speak, before I could understand what was about to happen, he climbed over me on the bed. I fell back to the pillows, and he hooked two claws into the neckline of my dress. Tickling, they gently scratched my skin as they tore through the material.

I tried and failed to form words.

My heart pounded too fast, too hard, and I knew it had nothing to do with the potion. It had everything to do with the wolf who ripped the gown free of my body.

Breath fled me when he rose and gripped the dress within his hands, his claws now sheathed. He split my gown in two screaming pieces.

In nothing but my lace undergarments, I tried again to sit up.

“Wouldn’t do that if I were you,” Scythe warned, and he then crawled over top of me to straddle my waist. With skilled swiftness, he took my wrist and used the material to tie it to the wooden head of the bed.
