‘This is ridiculous. May I remind you that Nick has his own business? And before you ask, he’s doing really well. He’s using my home office, and I’ll admit, I’ve had a sneaky peek. The calendar on the wall is bursting with bookings.’
‘But have you seen his accounts, his balance sheet?’ asked April.
‘I’ve not hacked into his computer if that’s what you’re asking, but I’ve seen some paperwork. He sent out some hefty invoices the other day, so he is making money.’
‘Assuming those invoices get paid in full and on time,’ April replied. ‘And what’s to say he isn’t deliberately leaving out paperwork to give you a false impression?’
‘Oh, please. Nick is a savvy businessman. He doesn’t need my money, and thank goodness for that.’ Faith eyed her friends over the rim of her wine glass. ‘Would it get you two off my back if I said I’m not nearly as wealthy as you suspect?’
‘Yes,’ April and Tara said in unison.
Faith set down her glass. ‘This house is a money pit and, for the record, Ella has a vested interest, which means it wouldn’t be my decision alone should I be coerced into selling up,’ she said. ‘To add to my woes, there are issues at work that I won’t bore you with, but suffice to say I would have struggled to pay for a holiday this year if Nick hadn’t offered.’ She put both hands on the table. ‘Look ladies, I’m not looking for love or a life partner. My arrangement with Nick is as much a financial arrangement as anything.’
‘How do you mean?’ April asked, leaning forward.
‘Nick is a lodger with benefits. His rent gives me a safety net and means I can stay here indefinitely. I don’t know why I didn’t think of it before.’
April eyed her with suspicion. ‘And was it your idea?’
‘This works to both our advantages,’ Faith said. ‘Neither of us could afford a place like this on our own.’
April refused to back down. ‘And does Nick know you’re not the rich widow people presume you to be?’
‘It would make no difference.’
‘I’ll take that as a no then.’
‘Are we going to fall out again, April?’ asked Faith.
Tara could see the conversation degenerating. ‘We’re just worried about you, that’s all.’
Faith’s voice was clear and confident. ‘Then don’t make me choose between our friendship and my relationship with Nick. You won’t like the outcome.’
