Here’s the one my lawyer’s worried about. He says when we go to trial, this one will be quite damaging:
Mackie Hollander: I’m glad this happened. All my friends thought I was a fag because this girl attacked me and I didn’t slap her. Now everyone knows she’s sick in the brain. What? No, I wasn’t scared. She just nicked me. Just a nick. I don’t know what her problem was. I was just sitting on the bleachers with my friends and we were a little pumped up, just getting psyched, like all right, you know, we were just excited about taking on Oak Bay. Hey, is it true that she stabbed that man in the neck? Twenty-five times, that’s what I heard. No, I don’t know the other girl. I saw her picture though. She looks pretty weird. I don’t associate with people who hang around downtown. Yeah, I’m sure it’s the same knife. I have described it twenty-five times to the sketch artist, but if you really need—OK. Thanks. What was her demeanor? What does that mean? Oh, the look on her face was, I don’t know, not really happy, but not scared, just like a normal girl’s face. Another thing, I forgot to tell before, is that she always used to wear tomboy clothes. And that day, she dressed kind of sleazy. Like the singer in Heart or something, like she was trying to be a rock star. I don’t know what color. I didn’t pay her much attention.
Now, when I look back, I can see she was actually pretty crazed. She’s a sicko. What kind of girl just stabs people for the hell of it? Her looks are pretty deceiving, huh? You guys must have been shocked. You should have seen her last year. She looked even more normal. I heard she was a virgin. Her girlfriends? She didn’t have any. Sometimes I saw her with Heather Hale. You heard about her, right? She’s messed up. I don’t think Sara had a lot of good influences in her life, but that’s no excuse.
Hey, I’m really sorry I didn’t report this earlier, but how was I supposed to know? Locke kicked her out of school, and I thought that was good enough. But now, I’m really sorry and I feel like it’s my fault, like if I’d told you guys, maybe Mr. Wallace wouldn’t have gotten hurt. My mom knows some of his wife’s friends, and supposedly, she’s really upset and we sent her a tea basket from Murchie’s.
Your partner told me I might be the star witness. Sure, yeah, wicked, I’m ready to go. I’m pretty good at public speaking. Do I have a suit? Yeah, I got one from Sears for the grad dance, but it was a rental. Oh, not a tux? Um, I’ll see what I can do. Anything, you know, whatever it takes. I really want to help out you guys.
