‘All we need is some incriminating audio…’ he repeats, dumbly. ‘How exactly are we going to pull that off? And what do you think you’ll be able to do with yourself after we tell the world about it? You’ll hardly sally off into the sunset.’

‘I don’t care,’ I say, rubbing a kaleidoscope of memory from my eyes as Dominic stares at me. ‘I just know that this isn’t justice. It never was. There are so many lies, I can hardly breathe through them. I can’t just up and start again, they’ve got all my papers, and for Kayleigh…’ I stop at the sound of her name, a punch in my throat. The fact that Robert Leigh Parish, that Captain Perv himself, has turned out to be the same loser whose danger money started all this in the first place has got nothing on the thought of what was still allowed to happen to my sister, even after I turned him in.

‘So talk to me,’ he says, jumping into the gap. ‘You want to record them? How? How on earth will we get anything inside the ministry? Won’t you be searched from the inside out?’

‘You said it yourself, it’s a top-down coverup. They’re expecting me inside, there’s a whole drill. Look, see?’ I hold up my phone as it starts to buzz again in my hand. ‘They never take this off me, as I need the codewords I get at the last minute. The sooner I get in, the sooner I’ll be out.’

‘And what if you don’t come out? Then what? I charge in after you and get tasered immediately, thrown into the stocks?’

‘You call all your police sources. You’ve said that the Met has what it needs to blow this case wide open and win it, you just wanted to be sure you weren’t being played…’

Dominic laughs, suddenly, high and mad.

‘You need to make it real if you’re going to get away alive. I mean it, Marie. You could be walking straight into a setup. I’m reconsidering it even as I say this. We need backup, logistics, the whole nine yards … You can’t be walking into this meeting with just me and a fucking pen in my pocket.’

‘No way,’ I shout, whirling away back into the street as he tries 240to grab me. ‘I’m nothing without blowing this wide open, and doing it right now. I’ll die rather than not do it.’
