Of course traffic in LA was horrid and it took almost an hour and twenty minutes to get back to the hospital. She beelined for the ICU waiting room and spotted Christian, his massive frame crammed into one of the plastic chairs, his face a mask of calculated concern. Seated beside him were Nina and Wishard, drinking coffees, the two of them laughing. A pang of jealousy bubbled to the surface. It wasn’t rational, but as far as Becca was considered, Wishard was supposed to be the enemy. Why was Nina laughing and talking like they were old friends?
“Becca?” Christian said. She shook off the annoyance and moved toward them. Nina’s and Wishard’s smiles faded. Becca could see that something was wrong, all three of them regarding her with identical expression of concern.
She ignored it, thrusting the stack of letters at Wishard. “You need to read these. Mo’s son gave them to me. They’re letters from the kid at the nonprofit. He talks all about Mo. How she manipulated him like she manipulated all the others. How she orchestrated the attack on her colleague, the fire he set that nearly killed her family. This should establish a pattern. At the very least, it will give you something to hold her on.”
There was a long pause as Christian, Wishard, and Nina exchanged glances. “What is it? What’s going on?”
Wishard sighed. “These letters may prove useful in the future, and I still want to speak to Ash, but she’s unconscious. I’m here because you should know that Vic exonerated Maureen of any and all culpability in the murder of Eli and Leslie as well as Ash’s assault. We were only able to charge her with several misdemeanors. Based on Maureen’s family’s connections, she was released two hours ago.”
“You let her go? You let Mo go?” Becca said softly. “What about Ash? What about her testimony?”
“Like I said before, Ash has to wake up first. Then we can get her statement and amend the charges. Until then, Mo walks,” Wishard said.
“Please tell me you’ve got eyes on Mo. That someone is watching her,” Becca said.
Wishard’s jaw tightened. “I requested surveillance, and my request was denied. Like I said before, Maureen Wilson has some very powerful, and very wealthy allies.”
A red-hot fury surged through Becca. She clenched her fists, gritting her teeth as she summoned every ounce of control.
“That woman is a goddamn sociopath and you just let her go?” Becca repeated.
