The letters were laid out on the passenger’s seat of Becca’s car, each one organized by date. She was careful not to bend or wrinkle them. She knew she should take them straight to the police, they were evidence after all, but this was Becca’s chance to gain a deeper understanding of Mo and what made her tick.
Each letter was written in neat block letters, as though every word were agonized over. The early ones were filled with teenage ramblings, Carlos complaining about his family, especially his abusive stepfather. As the letters continued, the young teen grew more effusive, thanking Mo for the money she’d given him so he could attend soccer camp, and how much he appreciated being able to crash in her office when his stepdad went on a bender. He would tell her how grateful he was for her friendship.
You make me feel like things will get better. That all of this is temporary, he wrote. Toward the end of the stack, they grew more and more desperate. Carlos didn’t understand why Mo was fired, and he was even more upset that they couldn’t see one another.
They’ve got things twisted, making it seem all sordid and shit. I keep telling them we’re just friends, but no one ever listens to me. Except you. I feel like you really get me.
Carlos struggled to understand why he wasn’t allowed to accept rides or gifts from Mo. He didn’t care about rules or optics. All he cared about was the future Mo promised him, a future in which she would care for him, finance his education, help him find a life away from his abusive stepfather and indifferent mother. A future in jeopardy because the people in Mo’s life objected to their relationship.
The last letter in the bunch left a lump in Becca’s throat.
That’s it. I’m tired of this. I’m ready to handle that stupid bitch that got you fired. And your family has turned their back on you too. You deserve better. It’s time for them to go. I won’t do anything until I hear from you. Whatever happens, I want to thank you for never giving up on me. You’re the only one that hasn’t. I’ve always got your back. Love Carlos.
Becca swallowed hard, fighting back the bile. As far as she was concerned, these letters were proof Mo was responsible for the fire and the assault against her coworker, and could establish a pattern of behavior. Becca needed to get this to the police. She sent a text to Christian and Wishard. Found something on Mo. Heading to hospital now.
